Marc, thank you for your kind offer, what are the capabilities of the pre-built controller and how much were you wanting for it?

I'm afraid I am set on the 8051, at least for now to wet my toes with. That said, I am looking for a design for a dev board/programmer with a serial interface instead of a parallel, do you know of any designs?

Do you care to go into any depth about your experience with the 8051? Was it documented anywhere?

Tom,

I just got done working with an 8051 based controller for a 17 DOF humanoid that my company is developing with a partner. After looking into the capabilites of the 8051 and the programming limitations we have moved to at ATMega128. The 8051 did a decent job and there was some good performance from the bot, but ultimately it was an older technology and not best suited to what we are trying to bring to market.

That said, if you're familiar with the C51 platform and have the dev tools it will work. If you are set on the 8051 and need a controller that is pre-built, let me know and I'll see if I can get you one of the old stock we have.

Hello again Robosavvy!

I have a question - has anyone here had any experience with the 8051 used in a robot project? I know the chip is capable of servo control etc, but examples would be great, I have looked on google but to no avail.

The reason I ask is that I can get the hardware/software to program/develop the 8051 family, and I am about to study this IC later this year, so primarily I would like to use this as a learning experience for both my course and robotics, with the added bonus of a beautiful robot!

I would like to make a biped using servos ultimately.

I am aware that there are other cheaper, easier IC's to use, but if the 8051 is viable but requires more input from me, I don't mind.
