It's not "April Fools", far from it.

The official press conference took place during Robo-One 9 here in Tokyo on March 19th. They are very serious about it, and have the participation and support of key people in the Japanese space program. The Pink Tentacle translation is very good, and matches what they said at the press conference very closely.

I think they are trying to go for the gundam wing style battles. Concidering how crap the first roboone season was i dont think that the robots fighting in space is going to be very entertaining for a couple of years. Should be most interesting to watch none the less.
