I still cant believe they allow those arm extensions. They are supposed to be humanoids. When is the last time you seen a human with retractable arms like a preying mantis...lol

The Robovie would do excellent in their lightweight class - as far as heavyweight goes, since the bot is <4kg>=5kg, with cg under the bottom 3rd of the height).

I remember seeing a lot of modified RN's and Bioloids at the KRF, it was incredible how fast they were - with lightened brackets and shifted cg's. The Korean trend of things: high torque, low cg, wide stance -> side fighting only. They fight well, but they are on the limit of the regulations - and with the Robo-One cg spec, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were disqualified. I personally enjoy trying to make my bot as close to human (proportionately) as possible.

Cool, I hope to see them in action to see if that bot is worth the price. I hope it is, it would be nice to try something new. I love my Kondo bots and bioloid but it everyone seems to have one too...lol It would be kinda cool to have a bot not every one else has. Besides I'm much to lazy to make one from scratch...lol I would rather mod an existing one.

Of course, all good things inhibit others - in this situation, a robot looses front-back stability (to a degree, it isn't horrible by any means) and thus is susceptible to front punches. I don't own one but I am considering getting. I like the design and I think it could be a pretty cool bot with the right programing. I also like the size of it. I is almost as wide as it is tall. Looking at this bot from a physics point of view it looks like with the right motion files it can be a pretty agile and stable bot. Plus I like the look of it. I haven't decided if I am getting one for sure but if I do I will post some vid and pics of it.

Thanks for posting the article Droid Works. I loved the videos. It does have a very impressive gait and set of moves. It is clearly a well engineered and well thought out robot.

I found the torso rotation particularly fascinating (in an out of the box thinking way), instead of having the torso rotation at the hips they have put it at the shoulders, which means much less mass for torso servo to move. They have also moved the yaw rotation of the arm to the elbows - thus being able reduce its height. Altogether Clever.

It has given me an idea on how to adjust my Bioloid so that it has a lower centre of gravity... can't wait to try it out.

Although it has to be said that I did chuckle at the marketing prose. But if they can justify it and it gets more people into this hobby(aka sport) then fine, the more the merrier.

I find that many things found deep in the robot world are often highly over-exaggerated - it's fantastic! Seriously, it makes everything a great read, and it helps draw the unfamiliar into our small community. And so it's alright if this robot isn't overly 'big' by some terms, but it is proportionately wider than many bots - and if you've seen its front walk, it is terribly impressive. Team Osaka certainly does have the soccer software mastered.

Aside from politely differing with you that the Robovie-M V3 was big, I pointed out some ad copy that was amusingly overboard. Since you didn't write the copy, I can't imagine why you would take issue. Maybe it's a Syracuse thing?

However, I think the lower-priced (USD$1490) KT-X Gladiator, with 19 DOF is worth a look, although the servos, at 9.2kg/cm (slightly less powerful than the KHR-2HV's 10kg/cm) strike me as being on the verge of anemic for a robot that's nudging a grand and a half USD. On the other hand, the price includes a wireless PS2-style controller. And at 13.5 inches tall, over two inches taller than the Robovie-M V3, it does qualify as "big." Well, pretty big.
