I'm spoken to the owner of the company at humanoids 2008 and I think he was a bit ambish. He was saying he hoped to sell 100,000 of these things in the next 2 years!

Also I talked to the CMU robo team about there thoughts and there very unhappy about it. they have to super glue it back together all the time because the plastic spilts.

I was alos shocked by the price. if it was sub $1,000 then it would be good but for the price I expect something a lot better.

Bren
Statistics: Posted by Robo1 — Thu Oct 01, 2009 3:45 am

"underwhelmed" is an understatement. what amazes me is that these guys managed to get some serious VC funding and have wisely used those funding to <strike>develop an amazing humanoid</strike> oil the decision making gears of RoboCup's chairing comity in order to create yet another <strike>inferior</strike> different league replacing the Aibo league, named after HRH the prince of all non industrial robots RIP, and called it astutely the Standard Platform League as it can not be called Humanoid league for political reasons, given that there already is a humanoid league.

Confucius once said about naming things inconsistently (in this case implying that the robot is regarded by the RoboCup community as a Standard Platform): “If language is not correct, then what is said is not what is meant; if what is said is not what is meant, then what must be done remains undone; if this remains undone, morals and art will deteriorate; if justice goes astray, the people will stand about in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness in what is said. This matters above everything.”

Statistics: Posted by limor — Wed Sep 30, 2009 2:26 pm

Nao is an interesting robot, it indeed is planned to have many capabilites that also QRIO had. Of course, Nao will do so at a much lower price than QRIO, which cost >50.000$ IIRC.

I´m still a bit underwhelmed by Nao´s locomotion capabilities though. The teams in the RoboCup Standard Platform League made tremendous advances in the last 2 years, but the Naos are still very slow compared to the top Humanoid League robots. Of course, being member of a Humanoid League team, my view is biased towards the capabilities necessary for that application. I think Aldebaran has to take care that locomotion doesn´t become the weak point in an otherwise capable (onboard vision, speech synthesis etc.) robot.
Statistics: Posted by SK — Fri Aug 28, 2009 7:34 am
