It'll be interesting to see how many of these show up at the Robo-One contest here next month.

Some of the regular competitors have been experimenting with vacuum forming to create their own shells. The basic equipment is pretty cheap - dollar store stuff - but the challenge is designing and fabricating the basic shapes. If you start with an existing model you can measure, scale up (or down), and modify to fit the robot geometry its a lot easier.

Durability can be a big issue, especially if you do any sort of active tricks or combat with the shells on. All of the competitors robots have major nicks, dings, scratches, and even broken brackets. The thin plastic painted shells scratch very easily.

That looks totally dope
I wonder how much?

I don't like what they did with the arms though.
That way the shoulder is very restricted in sideways movement.
I know why they did that though.
It's because they didn't add 2 extra servos in the legs
like they did in the arms to keep the proportions right.
I did that with my KHR-1 and it looks much better that way.

This weekend at a Gaming fair in Tokyo, you can see a concept armature dress for KHR-1. Made of military camouflage colored plastic. Haven't figured out yet which anime or video game character this has taken after..
