After about a week of a few hours of easy work per day, i finally managed to get the robot built to the point where i can program it to do stuff and it obeys.

Sadly i had to do it all alone, as the two friends that were supposed to help, turned out not to be interested enough, but the assembly was actually quite easy. Didn't even have to bother translating too much of the Jap. manual, except when it came to trim related sections (zeroing the servos, angle gauges, home position...).

I did have some problems tho - Sometimes, the tiny screws simply wouldn't go into the plastic part. The screwdriver would jump, and "eat" away at the head. I got worried i would damage a screw in a place where i couldn't get it out anymore, so i proceeded very carefully. I actually had to shorten many of the screws in places where i knew they wouldn't go in easily.

One plastic part was extremely nasty tho - the PCB base. At first a screw wouldn't go deep enough, got damaged, and I had to remove it with pliers, but that only broke off the head. I thought it was my fault, until later, when I was even more careful, a screw head broke off when I was tightening it with a screwdriver alone! Luckily that part isn't necessary for structural integrity, as it became impossible to put in another screw. That particular piece would have required some additional drilling first, to avoid this.

I managed to avoid any serious accidents, that would make it impossible to disassemble the robot and replace parts, but only cos I've been extremely careful.

I haven't actually started to cut the body covers yet, so it's naked for now, but programming it turned out to be fun enough already.

Unfortunately i am having some problems in this area as well:

My first problem is, that the English version of H2H3 I found isn't working properly. I managed to use it to zero the servos, and set the home position trim, and I could even write programs into RCB-3, but i simply can not make them run!

I was at the point where i thought the RCB-3 is malfunctioning, but then I tried the Japanese H2H3, and suddenly everything worked fine. Now I could write the programs to RCB-3 and execute them. But strangely, while it recognizes the programs I wrote in the English H2H3, they can not be executed for some reason.

Does anyone have a fully functional English H2H3, or knows what the problem could be?

For now i am forced to use the Japanese H2H3 for playing around. Luckily I remembered where the most important commands are, but it's annoying, besides I might miss something useful I could otherwise learn.

My second question relates to the ICS capabilities of the servos and the board. The servos and the board are supposed to provide a "learning" (or teaching) function, where you move the robot by hand, and take a snapshot of the positions, to save it as part of the program.

I tested it, and it actually works, except that the ICS servo position read-out seems very inaccurate. When i pose the robot, and press the snapshot button, it jumps from the position it's in, to a slightly different one, as the servos power up and move to the values reported.

Is this normal, or should I be worried? Are these feedback inaccuracies typical for ICS servos, or is it just that these aren't accurate enough?

The error is sometimes a bit too big - the servo jumps by 5 or almost 10°.
For now I simply adjusted the values after taking the snapshot, but sometimes it's hard to get exactly to the position the robot was in, before the feedback error made it "jump".

Is there a way to correct this, or minimize the error, or should i just get used to it?

My last question is about KRS-4024 servo wear... As i was posing the robot, and adjusting the trim to make it balanced on one foot, i noticed that the knee servo was very hot afterwards.

Now i don't plan to have the robot standing on one foot all the time, but i am guessing that the leg and especially knee servos suffer a lot. This could become dangerous with time, if I spent too much time playing with trimming the robot just right, while it was standing on one leg...
What are the experiences of other MANOI owners here? How many servos did you destroy so far, and which ones? Do you think it is a good idea to upgrade to stronger ones?

Back to playing with the robot!

Thanks!

PS: One last question. Programming the robot while running on the battery is clearly not a good idea, if for no other reason, then simply because it doesn't last long enough to actually write any kind of decent program.

Does anyone know how much current this thing needs max? I want to give it an external power supply, before the battery drives me crazy. I'm hoping 5A at 12V will be enough?
Statistics: Posted by Mark1 — Tue Aug 02, 2011 8:42 pm

Hi Orac!

You know how they say "better late than never"? Well, it's true..

I just spent two days and a night trying to translate the Japanese manual
myself, and all i ended up with is 15 pages of correctly translated text
(only one of which i actually managed to insert back into the PDF so far -
turns out that's the most annoying part), a few pages of not yet completely
corrected software translations (didn't bother to translate all of the
"Don't stick a fork in your eye while peeing into an electric socket!"
warnings yet) and a serious headache...

So even tho that software translated PDF you attached normally wouldn't
be a sight for sore eyes, today it most definitely is.

Thank you for the links, Orac! They will be very helpful, especially the
second one, since i didn't have that document yet!

P.S. Can't help but wonder what software was used to convert it, cos it did
quite a good job. But the translations suffer from a problem i noticed while
using Google Translate - sometimes a Japanese sentence spans more than
a single line, but copy/pasting it yields multiple lines in the translator, which
then treats them as separate sentences, making it hard or impossible to
figure out the actual meaning...

I had to manually make sure every sentence was continuous right up to its
actual end, in order to get the most accurate translations out of it...

Obviously a software can't easily do the same, so every line is treated as a
new sentence, and as a result, many of them make no sense whatsoever...

I still kinda feel the urge to keep translating, and if there were more people
actually interested, i would most likely finish it, but with the robot as old as
it is... Just makes no sense to spend so much time, when i could be building
it instead.
Statistics: Posted by Mark1 — Fri Jul 22, 2011 4:05 pm

Since the English version of the AT01 manual doesn't exist, and the software translated ones that used to circulate on this forum seem to be impossible to find, I began translating the Japanese manual myself, by using Google Translate, and then adjusting the translations for them to say what they actually meant to say.

Unfortunately I didn't have any experience editing PDF documents before now. The PDF editors I found and tried did not allow me to manipulate the text the way I would have liked. Some only let me edit one character at a time, others keep forgetting what font i want to paste the translated text in, and there are other problems. I'm sure it's doable, but since it's the first time for me, it would probably take me too long to learn all the tricks...

So instead I decided to try converting the PDF to a Word DOC file. It took several attempts with multiple programs and their various conversion options. Most of them failed miserably, but in the end I finally succeeded in creating an MS Word replica of the manual that looks almost identical to the original.

The program (Nitro PDF) did an amazing job in keeping everything in it's place, while also keeping all the text completely editable.

There are minor issues however. The page titles and certain notes and remarks are supposed to be nicely centered on specific backgrounds (clouds?), and surprisingly, they are! But the only thing keeping them in place is all the text that came before them and it's formatting...

So if i change anything on one page, it affects all the pages after it, unless i keep the text size and length exactly the same.

Additionally there are tabs with vertical text on the very right of the manual (meant for quick searching), the text in which was converted as a part of the regular text on the pages (it's all one continuous text), and was simply "pushed" to the very right with empty spaces - they are not in separate text windows, so it's actually quite incredible, that everything came out as well as it did!

One issue is in the fact, that in the original PDF document, the diagrams are drawn in vector graphics. You can zoom in all you want and still get a clear picture. In the DOC file however, the diagrams were converted into regular images. Their resolution is good enough as far as i can tell, but Word may render them somewhat strange, when their size is reduced from the original converted image resolution, especially when viewed on lower resolution screens.

I believe they would look a lot better on higher resolution monitors, but i am temporarily limited to an old laptop (1024x768), as my good one burnt out, so i can't be 100% sure just yet, but i will test how they look on a better monitor as soon as i can... If the document was printed however, the drawings would look the way they do in the original printed manual.

I will translate and correct everything as far as I can, before I actually start building, and then correct the rest of the translations during the assembly, when I figure out what they meant to say, in case it's not immediately evident from the software translation.

I will do everything I can to keep the texts correctly positioned within backgrounds and/or next to the corresponding images and diagrams, but it will probably require a few tricks here and there.

It might not end up perfectly looking (some translated titles or notes could end up being longer than the backgrounds they are supposed to be in), and there may be some excess data in the file, that I'll simply have to hide in the background in case removing it would disturb the layout too much...

But it will be a proper English manual you can actually use to build the robot from start to finish.

Since this is an old robot kit, there is currently only one other person (that i know of), who is actually looking for an English manual, but as far as I can tell, the robot is still for sale, so there might be others in the future. Maybe there are even some who would like to buy the robot, but are worried about the lack of any English instructions...

So when i'm done, I'll post the translated document in this thread, in case anyone ever needs it in the future.

P.S. If anyone has experience with editing PDF documents, and knows of a good program, where it would be as easy to change and replace the texts as it is in MS Word, please let me know.

The end result would still look better if I didn't have to convert it to Word for editing. I think a good PDF Editor would allow the backgrounds and clouds (or whatever they are called) to be adjusted in size when needed, and most likely it would also allow changing the text and its formatting without the changes affecting the layout of the pages after it. Not to mention, that the diagrams would remain in vector graphics...

So i'm still open to suggestions... Thanks!
Statistics: Posted by Mark1 — Tue Jul 19, 2011 1:14 pm

Thank you again Nicolas! You've been very helpful.
That diagram definitely answers the question of which screws to use where..

Currently studying the KHR-2HV manual, to see if we can use that approach as well.
Statistics: Posted by Mark1 — Sun Jul 17, 2011 3:26 pm

Thank you Nicolas, great links! Much appreciated! Should help us a lot.

A friend that is building this with me already has some experience with robotics, so it's not going to be too hard, but we're still also hoping to be able to find an actual manual.

Among other things, to verify the kit contents. Not to mention knowing for sure what goes where. Like which screw lengths to use for which parts. The robot was too expensive for a trial and error approach.

We were planning to use the rest of the money to buy upgrades from Robosavvy, so we're hoping we don't waste it on repairs from the very beginning...

OP: Check the list i am sending and let me know if you have anything else..
