I stand corrected, I forgot that I had to re-enable some services to get XP's Speech working under .Net, so my total Shutdown / Restart time right now is about 1 min 30 seconds. He's just GOT to be able to talk! Below is a screenshot of the services window on my Roboard. Note, some of these may be able to be disabled, but as is, this does work. Some services I have to turn back on depending on what I'm doing, but once he's stand-alone, more of these will get shut off.

Statistics: Posted by PaulL — Wed Mar 17, 2010 11:35 pm

On WinXP, I have the swap file turned off, and a bunch of services disabled. I "remote desktop" into my board, and the connection and running of the remote session is very fast, no noticeable lag or delay.

I have a Class 6 SD card, and wouldn't think of anything less. Hard drives are the bottleneck in just about any system, so a fast HDD subsystem is a must in this type of application. Basically, if you don't have a Class 6 card, you're shorting yourself.

Mine is a "Transcend" card, Class 6, 8gb, and it works great.

If I recall, boot times are right at 40 seconds from power on to desktop, and 20 seconds to shutdown, almost exactly 60 seconds for restart.
Statistics: Posted by PaulL — Wed Mar 17, 2010 11:14 am

Hi Mondy

the 1Gb sd card Robosavvy offers with the Roboards is Class 2, the most common and also the slowest.
Please note that the offer of the SD card is made by Robosavvy to its customers (it doesn't come standard with the Roboard)

It is meant to be a way of getting you started and use it for your testing, debugging or experiment.

For the other part of the question, we are told that the speed of the SD card is the factor that more directly limits performance of the board. This is information provided by DMP.
From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Dig ... ss_Ratings you can find the different speed/Class ratings:

Class 2: 2 MByte/s - 13x
Class 4: 4 MByte/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MByte/s - 40x

You can see that a class 6 card can easily be twice as fast (up to three times) as fast as a class 2 card (Which are the most common).
Therefore the information we have is that using a High Speed card will reduce this bottleneck significantly.

If on top of this you add that the board has only 256mb, whenever windows or linux needs to use the pagefile, having a fast card will definitelly enhance performance.

I don't have numbers/figures. Only DMP may be able to provide them (if they have it... i don't know if they do). Bu tin any acse this is the technical explanation.

In real world conditions, windows xp runs fine on the roboard. this is not a core i5 of course but for the size and power consumption it is very good.
Statistics: Posted by PedroR — Tue Mar 16, 2010 2:23 am

Might also try turing off the page file. That will cut down on disk activity alot. If this fixes it then you know it is the SD card bottleneck.
Statistics: Posted by comds — Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:09 pm

I get that XP should run normally, however I can usually click on something and go fix a meal before anything happens. XP took something like six hours to install, and it does run, just not usefully. I don't have anything running in the background other than freshly installed windows stuff. I guess I'll reinstall and see if that helps

Also all the animations and such are turned off and resolution is 640x480, and color is 16bit
Statistics: Posted by swift — Sun Mar 14, 2010 9:43 pm

i'd be inclined towards manufacturer.

at least the indication we have form DMP is that a class 6 card significantly improves performance.

i have never tried a class 6 myself (i also used calls 2 when testing) and in my case it worked well too.
Statistics: Posted by PedroR — Sun Mar 14, 2010 8:32 pm

I run windows XP service pack 2 on my roboard using a class 2 SANDISK card and it runs perfectly. However when I tried it on a class 4 KINGSTON card the setup failed many times and when it did work, windows was not booting correctly? windows xp has a normal speed when running on the robaord.

The WIndows XP setup runs a bit slow (it can take some hours to complete) but once it's installed, it runs normally.

However you need to ensure that you DON'T have any antivirus installed or background apps eating processor cycles as these will slow the system down.

another thing you need to look at is the speed/quality of the sd card.

Roboard recommends Class 6 SD cards from good, reputable manufacturers.
Statistics: Posted by PedroR — Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:54 pm

Win XP runs absurdly slow on my Roboard. It can take up to 5 minutes for a remote desktop session to load, and it took over 20 minutes to activate windows. Is this just how things are, or do I have something set wrong?

I have a 4gb series 2 sd card as the HD, and the remote desktop session running over a direct LAN connection to my PC, no router or anything.

Thanks in advance
Statistics: Posted by swift — Sun Mar 14, 2010 3:09 am
