Thanks! Got it working in 1 try now.

For anyone else reading roboard's post, please note that the link misses a '-' (dash) between '1' and 'vortex'. So don't be fooled, the file is there.

@ roboard : please note I also tried the updated tutorial at http://jurr.org/files/Debian_RB-100.pdf which already mentions the newer kernel package (actually I automatically used the different package names from the first time) so the update in that tutorial is not sufficient to get it to work; since the package is mentioned people might be fooled that it should..

Thanks again. Hi,

Overgoor's tutorial uses the 2.6.29 kernel package:

http://www.roboard.com/Files/RB-100/linux-image-2.6.29.1-vortex86dx_1.0_i386.zip

Please try Overgoor's tutorial again with the old kernal package.

Overgoor's tutorial needs extra steps to fit to the new 2.6.30 kernal. A installation guide using the 2.6.30 kernal is being prepared and will be released soon.
Statistics: Posted by roboard — Mon Aug 02, 2010 2:48 pm

Hi,

I followed the complete tutorial step by step (the one on http://www.roboard.com/Files/RB-100/ since http://jurr.org/ is not currently available) two times now,
unfortunately once finished I keep getting a kernel panic within less than 5 seconds of booting:

Code:

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

Furthermore when I start up, aside from the 2.6.30-vortex86mx I can also select a 2.6.26-2-486 kernel in the grub menu (is this correct?).
If I select that one it keeps booting much longer (almost 28sec), however then it freezes for a couple of minutes and eventually displays:

Code:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/hda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!!

I guess something is not working with my uSD card functioning as HD but my Linux knowledge is insufficient to understand what is really going on here, let alone how to fix it. So any help/info/hints are greatly appreciated.

I'm using:
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cur ... sscard.iso
http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/ ... /initrd.gz
and
http://www.roboard.com/Files/RB-100/lin ... 0_i386.zip
Statistics: Posted by ArthurSAM — Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:08 am
