Tomy Co., Ltd. has developed Omnibot 2007 i-SOBOT, a low-price compact hobby bipedal humanoid robot that is slated for launch in summer 2007. The product size is reduced to the extent of 165 x 96 x 67 mm through the development of a proprietary compact servo motor. The estimated price is ¥29,800 (excluding tax; pre-assembled).

The robot is equipped with 17 servo motors provided throughout the body and also a gyro sensor. It is capable of making different kinds of smooth motions while automatically balancing itself. Tomy plans to provide five operational modes: (1) remote control mode; (2) programmed mode; (3) special action mode; (4) voice control mode; and (5) dance mode. The company says that it can also move while outputting words, sound effects, music, etc. from a built-in speaker. It runs on three AAA nickel-metal-hydride rechargeable batteries and weighs about 350 g including them.

No, it's a custom design by Takara/Tomy focused on minimizing cost as much as possible. That's why it's so small and doesn't use any standard parts.

No one can buy it yet - the evaluation units aren't even ready. Takara Tomy just announced it earlier today. The version in the picture won't be released until October and will be around $400. The simplier version without the head mounted camera and wireless LAN capability goes on sale in Japan in July for just under $300.
