One of the nicest things about Makerbot printers is they "hackable" nature.
We believe once you get one and start experimenting, you'll want to start doing modifications and extend its purpose.
The Makerbot blog, has a story about a customer who adpated a Laser to the Head and uses it to some precision cutting using the machine.

While this laser is not nearly strong enough to cut wood, it draws very nicely into it. And you can cut paper. This gives way to some pretty cool applications "

The motors for the X/Y/Z axis are quite precise, (even more on the new Thing-o-Matic) so you can actually use it for many other pursposes.
