Benign First Humanoids
Indeed, as you say Orec, the first humanoids will be rather benign, mainly doing imitation. They will go through the motions but not really know why. It may take some time for AI to play catch up.

Mimic AI
Plus, strong imitation may mimic AI and fool us. I think this will be a great caveat.

humanoido
Statistics: Posted by Humanoido — Sat May 05, 2007 2:36 pm

I think it could be more like cars, stick it in th eback of a van and take it to a lockup garag where its stripped down in 5 minutes for parts.

To be honest, humans are a long way from understanding how their brains work, I think it will be a veerryy long time before we see anything that we would consider cognative.

The helpers around work and home would be simple beasts of burden. Rules regarding rights should be more about protecting us from them and their makers.
Statistics: Posted by Orac — Fri May 04, 2007 3:11 pm

LOL!!! You have a very good point, Robo1. It would not be any different with a human walking down the street at night in a high crime region of the city. I mean humans get mugged, their money stolen, kidnapped for ransom... the same can happen to a humanoid robot.

Well, think of it. Our robots have become masters of Karate, Exercise, Kung Foo, Martial Arts, Wrestling, Tai Chi, Kick Boxing and running! Plus, they've got batteries and electricity for purposes. I think they're going to kick some major *ass!*

humanoido
Statistics: Posted by Humanoido — Fri May 04, 2007 10:11 am

An interesting idea came to me waist reading this thread.

If your going to have robots walking the world want people try and steal them. If i sore asimo walking down the rood out side my house I would be tempted to kidnap him. Will the robot be allowed to us self defense to stop this like some sort of security feature

You have 10 seconds to move away from me before ......

Bren
Statistics: Posted by Robo1 — Fri May 04, 2007 5:48 am

Thanks for the great link, orac. Indeed, robot rights will become more of a significant issue after we see an increase artificial intelligence and autonomy. When that happens, we'll see robots walking around on the street sidewalks and doing some jobs, like delivery, caretaker, greeting, street corner sales, and construction, to name a few. At that time, I would expect you could buy a home robot to entertain and help with chores around the house, like take out the garbage, vacuum, do the dishes, wash the clothes, and clean house, plus baby sit. You could probably tell your humanoid to take the mail to the post office and it would drive a car to get there and back. It would also be capable of daydreaming and creativity and philosophy to ponder its own existence. What do you think?

humanoido
Statistics: Posted by Humanoido — Fri May 04, 2007 5:17 am
