Walking surfaces

i ended up in homebase earlier, my fiance was after something for the garden, so i went to have a look at flooring. they had a big range of click flooring and after spending 10 minutes feeling my way around i opted for the dark oak laminated. they have a 1m,sq for about 14 gbp.

however, my fiance spotted a "garden draughts" game. it's made of interlocking eva material and ends up being 1.24m x 1.24m. it's very light and once constructed my robots coped with it very well. it was about 14 gbp too, so i decided to go for it and was very glad i did! very easy to store and plenty of space for your robots to fight!

i'm still trying to find a good surface myself, i like the idea of the click flooring for saving space!

You have to consider what moves RN-1 will make. The stock moves are programmed to require a certain amount of slipping on the floor. Experiments with grippy shoes demonstrated the degree and element of required slippage. Take that away and RN-1 will fall more often. I have not tried a lot of surfaces, but can compare grip surfaces, ceramic tile, and wood. Of the three, wood has the best effect, when it has just the right amount of texturing or finish. This assumes a dull finished medium hard wood with a nominal coefficient of sliding friction. Ceramic works well in the slide department, and dramatic moves will cause additional "creep" across the floor, sometimes resulting in unintended angular direction. I put small cusions on the chest and various other positions to lessen the impacts of falls on ceramic, and to avoid marks being made on wood floors.

I think that these are the plans for the competition steps. I will probably be using these plans and make it with a vinyl finish as this seems to be a popular choice. I will have to make sure I keep correct dimensions though.

Judging from the available pictures, I took this to indicate that it was probably melamine covered particleboard.

The octagon table used for combat from last year's event was provided by Hitec. It had a thick melamine surface. I didn't look, but your probably right in saying that it covered a sheet of particle board. The legs were made from 6" dia. PVC.

I use formica for doing most of my experimentation. It seems a little more slippery than melamine, but works quite well.

The surfaces I have had the best luck with are concrete, Vinyl floors and wood floors.

I'm not a big fan of concrete. It seems to tear up the delrin parts on the RN-1 and scratches the anodized surface. And when the fella' falls... just seems like it hurts Wood floors are good, but (at least w/ mine) can't always guarantee a consistently flat surface. Like w/ the martial arts code... that was programmed on my Hardwood floor. Works perfectly for my bot on that floor, but if I take him somewhere else, he tends to fall.

The stairs look like they are 30mm tall with a length or depth of 120mm. I will post the plans when I get them done.

Back when I was going to try to make it to Robogames with my RN-1, I e-mailed Dave and ask what the floor surfaces were for the Toss, Eagle, and Agility.

Hi Dave,
For the Robo-1 competitions in June, could you tell me what the floor
material is made of. I'm thinking mostly of the arenas for the Toss,
Agility. and Eagle.

I have found that the best surface is the laminated " clik flooring " which you can buy in packs of 5 pieces when clipped together makes up a base of about a metre square for the robo to perform on.
This panel can be just be laid on the carpet in any room and when you have finished with it if it gets in the way you can just unclip it back into it's 5 original pieces.

When I have finished building my RN-1 I was thinking about programming it for the step challenge (don't know if this is too ambitious.) ?

Maybe i will be at Robogames in the future.

I was wondering what sorts of surfaces he will be able to walk on without problems. I have nearly completed mine.
