If your after something more basic then the RN-1 but better then a RS maybe look into the Bioloid. If i was new to robotics i dont think i would be able to get my $1000 worth of robot action out of the robonova.
Statistics: Posted by Toukisarchu — Thu Apr 13, 2006 2:38 am

Well don't try to compare it with RoboSapien. That's a toy and RoboNova is more of an experimenters platform. If you are not fairly skilled in electronics and programming you aren't going to be able to get all you want from RoboNova. It's a great starting platform but you'd get bored fast if you don't plan to hack it.
There maybe some "bolt on" accesories down the road but you need to dive in to the guts to get the most out of it. I see a future with tons of homebrew add ons and software routines. I'm not shy about taking a soldering iron and dremel to my RoboNova and there's a great sense of accomplishment when you get it to react to sensors, talk etc
Statistics: Posted by subpilot — Sat Mar 11, 2006 7:25 pm

I was hoping that the Robo would be more than just a program and drive bot.Not at all experienced at this so please bare with my thoughts but i would like more feedback from robo even as simple as with the Sapien my son has, that does at least give you some interaction.I guess with time things will become available to bolt on or maybe i need further guidance to trail a differnet path ?
Statistics: Posted by rep001 — Sat Mar 11, 2006 2:53 pm

For speech applications there are two ways to go, an embedded solution generally using a Winbond chip like in the Devantech SP03 Text to Speech Synthesizer. The other way to go is to offload the text to speech function to a PC and send the audio wirelessly. That's how I went by using a Bluetooth Headset and audio amp. The advantages the PC has over the embedded version is much higher quality speech with very little "robo" sound and an unlimited vocabulary. If you don't care if it sounds robot like then the speech module is easier to implement. Both ways take up a bit of valuable real estate on your Robonova and will require some hacking.
As for AI, it's going to be a bit limited using Robobasic. You will have to poll all your sensors and then react after the fact. Not an ideal situation, but you can get some interesting interactions.
There isn't alot of physical room for expansion so you have to try to keep everything as small as possible.
Statistics: Posted by subpilot — Sat Mar 11, 2006 6:07 am
