Primarily the issue with the charger is all about voltage as it inputs an excess above and beyond the operating specs of the board. If going with an external battery or power supply unit, match the board requirements, or match the existing battery pack specs. The next issue is that the power supply will need to deliver enough amps to supply the servos.

humanoido
Statistics: Posted by Humanoido — Fri Apr 04, 2008 2:34 am

Guys, the spec I'm using is for Powered USB, it provides 6Amps through the cable, but since I didn't like the available voltage I just stole the cable and connector, not the actual (and expensive) powered USB hub.

Basically, it is a very small adapter board that creates a powered switch between the battery input and the battery. When the USB is available it powers eveything from the incoming supply from the USB (not the battery) and completes the serial connection (now rerouted through the USB cable via software).

With a little minor surgery to the MC3024 you can also plug in the charger to charge the battery while it is in use.

Should have something this weekend for you guys to see.

MadDog Joe
Statistics: Posted by MadDogJoe — Thu Mar 27, 2008 7:11 pm

Compared to "at rest," the combination of servos in motion draw considerable amperage and the total is dependent on a number of factors, including speed, load, number of engaged servos in motion, position, etc. A power supply that matches specifications of the battery pack should suffice. Make sure it's regulated, filtered, and fused properly!

humanoido
Statistics: Posted by Humanoido — Thu Mar 27, 2008 3:53 am

You may need a beefy power supply.

I remember reading on here somewhere that RN can draw 4 amps just standing still!

Way more than USB can supply.

Statistics: Posted by badlands — Wed Mar 26, 2008 8:25 pm
