Robonova-1 is the cheapest, is there a reason for that? He likes the fact that it can be modified, but does that make it more long-term interesting than the BC?

At first he was set on the KHR-2HV, but then he read good things about the Robonova-1 and Bioloid Comprehensive, so he decided to consider them, too.

He doesn't want a robot that is extremeley easy to build. He would like a challenge, but doable.

There's a new humanoid called MechRC. The software is very child friendly. See also the new forum here dedicated to MechRC.

Every robot is different in terms of price, ease of construction, expandability, and the size of the support community. You need to decide what is most important to you and your son. Honestly, you won't be dissappointed with any of the three.

RoboNova-1 and KHR-2HV seem to be dating faster than Bioloid.
and if you want :

From what I have seen, I think Bioloid is your Robot. However I think you should also seriously consider RoboBuilder.

I bought the Bioloid because of the flexibility of what I can do with it. I can make a snake, a quadruped, a hexapod or a humanoid. Some of this flexibility is also available in RoboBuilder.

Both of the Bioloid and Robobuilder kits have an entry level programming environment and can expand to however geeky you want to be, hacking the controller and making it do things it's not supposed to are par for the course.

The RoboNova is a fixed humanoid. In stock form it's a better humanoid than a Bioloid or RoboBuilder but getting away from the precoded motions is about as hard. The RoboNova only really starts to lag behind the other two if you do want to build something different to a humanoid. Then you're mostly screwed.

If I was buying a new robot between now and Christmas, I would lean towards buying a Bioloid. It is a more flexible robot platform and you program it in C and not RoboBasic. Remote control, Gyros and other accessories will have to be bought with anyone one of the three platforms.

Hi Gort,
Thank you for responding.

For your first question, my husband and I will be able to help him with the robot if he needs us to.

He thinks the robot transforming is a bonus, but he is more interested in a good humanoid, so he doesn't want to lose quality of the humanoid because it transforms.

We are in the US, if they makes the choice clearer.
