I performed a massive servo swap this past weekend. I've ended up buying enough parts to not only equip my "latest" RN-1 with HSR-5498SG's all around, but had enough parts left over to reconstruct my stock RN-1 with the stock HSR-8498HB's.

The difference in play in the servos is night and day. My stock HSR-8498HB servos haven't seen much use, but all the same, the HSR-5498SG's are EXTREMELY tight. I have seen specs for other "better selling" robots in recent times, and the torque specs of the HSR-5498SG's are more like others that seem to sell better. The RN-1 kits from vendors seem to be hanging out longer than they should, so I think the time has come...

Further, folks who have seen the stock RN-1 versus my blue RN-1 prefer the blue one hands down.

So, HITEC, Listen up! Take those other colored bracket sets you have lying around, all but the gold, and all those HSR-5498SG's in the warehouse, and put out the RN-2!!!

I can't wait to finish up my hardware mods and software for the Roboard, but I can say, I think it's going to be a pretty sweet 'bot!!

So, Hitec, a few other options on top of servo upgrades and colored bracket sets- upgrade the cells to Lipo (got some cells from overseas, 2200 mAh that fit inside the body, in contrast with the 1000 mAh stock NiMh cells), do something more mod-able with a faster controller (Roboard, and perhaps some investment in a team of programmers to build some nifty software?), and put out the RN-2!!!

Meanwhile, I'll keep working on my RN 1.5...

Take Care,
Paul
Statistics: Posted by PaulL — Thu Apr 08, 2010 3:19 am
