Hey Derek,

We've bumped into each other a few times at BattleBots. When Cupcake was beat by El Furro, I beat El Furro with Gnat then ran into Hoser'd...nuff said about that..I had the MW Maggot, now fighting Botfly.

I've been watching your progress with Bing. Very impressive.

I don't know about Dave running the Toss and stuff at RG. He might if anyone signes up just as a demo if nothing else. I'm just getting burned out with the combat. I know it's different with the Robo-Ones, but the other things just look more fun to try. It will be challanging without sonar or a camera, but not everything has to be autonomous.

Good Luck with Bing
Gary
Statistics: Posted by gdubb2 — Thu Jan 18, 2007 10:31 pm

Good luck with your ongoing development!

In the past, I don't think anybody has ever signed up for the eagle, door, toss, etc, so I'd worry about RoboGames even running those events.

One thing you could do is show off Bheka's skills in the Demonstration event, which I think is pretty much free-form.
Statistics: Posted by DerekZahn — Thu Jan 18, 2007 9:52 pm

Hi Marcus..

You do such great moves with a stock RN-1 too. I have used some and really enjoyed them.

I'm leaving the arm rotation in place, I don't think it will upset thing very much. I was playing with batteries too. Made some new packs from 1000 maH AAA Nimh cells. Since I filled the center of the torso with the rotation servos, I needed something else. The new packs hang on the hips.

Now that it is stock again, the hip packs will still work as well as giving me back the standard one. There isn't much difference in weight between 1 standard pack and 2 AAA packs. (added 28 grams) Hopefully they won't upset the balance.

Gary
Statistics: Posted by gdubb2 — Thu Jan 18, 2007 8:45 pm

I hear you.

I took the path of getting to know my £600 friend before venturing into unknown waters.
Even now, i would not attempt hip rotation. I am slowly working my way to making grippers, then I may look into waist rotation.
For now I am content just to program my friend and find the edge of the envelope I am working with. When I understand that, then I will add DOF.

Marcus.
Statistics: Posted by DirtyRoboto — Thu Jan 18, 2007 7:07 pm

Well, I just had a somewhat humbling experience. I had added 4 more 8498 servos to "Bheka" in an effort to get leg and arm rotation, with grippers to be the next task. I hadn't spent a great deal of time with the movements in the stock form because I figured that I would have to change them again anyway. Bad move...

After waiting for 2 months for the servos from a #$%^ vendor, I finally got my order cancelled and bought from Trossen (Great service). Anyway after making all sorts of brackets, I had a thing that looked somewhat like Tony Ohms, Hiveminds, and a couple of others. The problem arose when trying to walk. there was so much wobble in the legs that it would not walk "no how-no way". Some of the wobble was from the added height, and some was from the weak servos. Not to mention added weight. I tried several combinations of brackets in an effort to get the lower legs centered under the top leg servo to no avail.

Yesterday I decided to start again and just put the legs back to the stock configurations until I get a better grip on how things are done. I guess I tried to do to much to fast. The legs are back to normal now, just need to run the wiring.

I'll try again some time, but for now at least I have a couple of spare servos. Perhaps leg rotation isn't as important as I think it should be. My grand plan is to compete at Robogames, but not in combat. I'm actually more interested in the Toss, door opening, and eagle competitions.

Sorry if I bored anyone, just needed to vent a little.

Gary
Statistics: Posted by gdubb2 — Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:46 pm
