Yes I'm a "newbee" again.
How did you guess I'm thinking of making a hexapod?
With the abilities of AX-12 I just had to buy a comp.kit. But I've not started any project yet. Working with some others.

Hi,

I've tried dying some bioloid parts. I used something called DYLON. I tried to dye them black and the result was not completely as expected LOL.

I think I'll have to try it again with a stronger consentration.
The result was not to bad, almost military pattern.

Anyone try RIT dye on the plastic. Works for all kinds of RC parts. Worth a try on a spare bracket I'd say. You can dye some pretty cool colors with it. Even solid black.The Bioloid would be ideal seeing as how it's plastic is white. An excellent color for dying.

If you use Krylon Fusion note that it states 5-7 days before coating is chip proof. I've used Krylon Fusion many times and it works well when surfaces are clean of dust and oils. I use alcohol and then once dry use a tack cloth to remove any dust before painting. As Alpha states I'd be concerned about adding thickness with paint so I still think the Vinyl Dye is the best way to go.

If you decide to go the krylon fusion rout, make sure the surface to be painted is as clean as possible and free of oil (use rubbing alcohol and don't touch it after you clean it). Spray a very thin coat, let it dry and repeat. Since fusion bonds at the molecular level, there is no need to sand. It's not like regular spray paint.

A dye of some sort may be the way to go. While I've had terrific results with krylon fusion, I would be concerned with the thickness any coat of paint would add to parts that are to be joined together.

I think I'm going to try the decal route as it is a non-chemical solution to dress up the robot... But perhaps I will experiment with vinyl dye with some left over pieces from the Comprehensive kit. For now, the default color scheme isn't too bad... Just the box for the chest area of the humanoid seems to be very barren and just asking for some decal!

I personally wouldn't mind to stick "BIOLOID" sticker like on the box art, but sadly, they didn't include any decals/stickers of "BIOLOID" or "ROBOTIS"

Well, I'm going to name my bot Juumaru (like the anime Plaresu Sanshiro (Juumaru). Don't know what this is? Well, I'll post it in the general section...

For a good finish on soft plastic without sanding try using vinyl dye. Its very popular for computer case mods as its extremely thin and it doesn't scratch or rub off. It can generally be found at auto parts places.

I tried the Krylon for plastic paint. First I just Sprayed. No good. After a bit of light use the paint scratched off. I then tried sanding the parts, then painting. This worked better but I could not sand everywhere and it took a lot of time to just do a few parts. Any place that was not sanded (Very fine sand paper) the paint peeled.

I had bought Plasti Dip. Made by Performix. It is basically rubber coating in a can. It is used to coat surfaces to give better grip. I bought it to put on just the bottom of the feet. It worked GREAT on the bottom of the feet and after I saw the Kryon was not working out, I painted the whole thing with the Plasti Dip. It was fast and easy. It applied a light coat to the plastic parts and it works! I even tried scraping it off with my nail and it did not peel. I have used my bot on hardwood floors and concrete and the bottom of the foot is still in pretty good condition. I think the can cost like 6 dollars at Home Depot.

This is a sweet color scheme of the Bioloid kit that Tribotix sells (although some of their products tend to be old, such as the KHR-1):

No first hand experience but I read somewhere else that a person tried dye and paint and neither one works - it just peels off. He ended up using a marker to change the color.

I don't know what types of dyes and paints he tried.

Are the plastics of the Bioloid dyeable? Has anyone out there dyed their Bioloid? How about painting it?

The second topic I want to bring up are the feet. Has anyone implemented a feet for the Bioloid (humanoid) with larger area? All the other humanoids seems to have bigger surface area to height ratio. I think this will make the walking gait much more forgiving on carpet...
