hi kaerf

The beta versions Robotis had been distributing had an all-in-one chip solution with 6 axis IMU. It used a magnetometer instead of a gyro to detect pitch/roll/yaw.
However because the Magnetometer had too much noise, the chip had to be replaced in the final version of the kit as it was unusable for dynamic walk stabilization.

Therefore, the final version comes with a _true_ 2 axis gyro (the advertised images show a gyro) which is the solution that offers the best reliability.
This information was reflected in the images released by Robotis in the final announcement (that we were advertising during the pre-release campaign). The images showed an XY balance sensor.

However, we have inadvertently introduced an error when we revised the Bioloid PREMIUM product page last week. We have inadavertently made reference to the old solution with the magnetometer. The page has now been updated and fixed to reflect the correct information.

With regards to a 6 axis IMU, it is not yet available from Robotis but one is supposed to be available as an upgrade for Bioloid, compatible with both PREMIUM and Comprehensive kits (and any device with a Dynamixel bus including the USB2Dynamixel and custom solutions)

As a final note, with regards to the video above, it seems the Bioloid is using the distance sensor (one of which is now located in the chest) to determine the proximity of the ball and grab it.
It also seems to be using the IMU to balance itself when absorbing the energy of the ball (ie while stopping the ball).

Regards
Pedro
Statistics: Posted by PedroR — Mon Dec 28, 2009 11:55 am

FYI, I bought a couple of the premium kits (1 from robosavvy) and it looks like Bioloid is shipping with a 2 axis gyro instead of the IMU listed on http://robosavvy.com/store/product_info ... cts_id/600.

I'm not terribly familiar with sensor output, but the readings from the sensor actually seem like accelerometer readings rather than gyro readings...either that or the signal to noise ratio might be a bit low.

I'd love to hear what other people think of the gyro...any custom code yet?
Statistics: Posted by kaerf — Sat Dec 26, 2009 6:40 am
