I believe that the designs are simply taking advantage of the double knee joint which looks to be placed as close as possible for the most rotation of those two servos. I built my robots legs like that once (designed the aluminum parts and all) and it looked very similar. To be able to rotate past the foot and hip area, the knee needs to be situated farther away. Otherwise the robot couldnt squat down.

Thats just my $.02
Statistics: Posted by hivemind — Sat Nov 25, 2006 1:36 am

Check out this match between King Kizer and Retro.

In addition to being a great match (with a really impressive counter move in the middle), I noticed a design detail I hadn't really paid attention to before. Both bots (built by very experienced and successful competitors) have curved or angled legs, such that the knee is substantially forward of the hips and feet.

Anyone care to speculate on why this is an advantageous leg shape?

Thanks,
— Joe
Statistics: Posted by Joe — Sat Nov 25, 2006 12:11 am
