I just wrote up a review of low-degree-of-freedom biped robot designs.  These use far fewer servos than a typical humanoid, and so cost a lot less.  That makes them very interesting for newcomers to the hobby, or anybody who wants another biped toddling around but doesn't want to drop a large chunk of cash into it.
