UK robotics clubs

After scanning through google, it seems that the UK is lagging behind the rest of the world in not having lots of regional robotics clubs.

Is this my imagination?

I have competed in Robotwars for several years and I know that the FRA still organises local events but there just doesn't seem to be anything non-combat related.

Most events in the UK seems to revolve around schools and their curriculums, while this is great for the next generation, I think that there are plenty of early "Maplin" type tinkerers out there aged 25 and up who aren't at school or uni and would love to be part of a local technological society.

I would like nothing better than to do what I currently do with my kitcar club, which is to meet up with a local group every month at a nice geek friendly pub and while a few hours away chatting, arguing and letting our creations loose to chat up the fruit machines :)

Just me ?

Totally agree Orac, but its not just in the clubs we lack, how many UK forums are there, UK shops?, UK Members?

I also agree we have some catching up to do but I have to say its a lot easier than when I first started 'playing' with hobby robotics. Back then there were no shops or online business available at all in the UK. At least now after over 25 years there is a growing community and a lot of interesting stuff happening in the UK. Having said that heres hoping it goes from strength to strength....

I'm down south too, normally based in Newbury, West Berkshire. I may be going to Birmingham on the 30th from Bristol if people want to lift share.

Definitely interested in local (or semi-local) meets, if only to share ideas and a beverage.

Maybe when we are up in Birmingham we can get an idea of any clusters of members who would be interrested in starting something.

Is it extected to be 10 people or 10,000?

Hi there,

There should be 100 - 200 people there for the micro mouse and 5 - 10 people there with there robo one's.

It should be a good day, If you never seen a proper micro mouse you would be surprised by there speed and design.

I'm busy trying to get the new bot to a good standard for the event and put the KHR-2 back together with the new controller trying to program it now and it's taking some time.
