I was thinking about this idea about this and I developed a train of thought. First if the robots weight is to be kept low, its control could be wireless through bluetooth. The control could be through a laptop or whatever but the idea would be to have major processing externally. This processing would then relay comands to the servo controllers.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have seen from most robo-one bots, the actual offensive moves are preprogramed. The move are then executed when a button is pushed on a ps2 style remote. Therefore it would seem that if the robots were equiped with sensors that would help it detect its opponent, the external computer would then command the robot to move within a certain proximity and then execute a certain move.
I dont know if anyone has been working on this type of idea. Please feel free to pick this idea apart. Im not sure if this is even a good idea.
It's a good idea, definitely.
Many of the ROBO-ONE competitions are autonomous in nature. For example the first day of the main competitions is devoted to 2 minute autonomous demonstrations where you aren't allowed to use any remote control.
A few of the ROBO-ONE Special events are autonomous, including the ball toss and the sprint.
Some of the top builders have incorporated some autonomous ability into their robots. King Kizer, for example, can track and attack opponents by itself. The Sumi Family robots have similar capability.
That being said, it's still very early in the development curve. At this point a totally autonomous robot wouldn't have much of a chance going up one that was remote controlled, and there aren't enough totally autonomous robots yet to break it off into a separate classification.
Hopefully that will change over the next year or two. We'll see.
