I am trying to get into robotics, but I can't afford to buy new. I am having trouble figuring out what is a fair price for a slightly used robot. I would appreciate your help with this poll.

Please feel free to supply the reasoning behind your answer.

it's all a case of supply and demand. As there not that many people that want a biped there isn't that many people to bid for a used one. On this basis and from memory of the price that they have gone for second hand 50 - 75% sounds about right.

Hi,
Robonovas sell for around £375 on ebay so about 75% of new price :)

Me personally, I would beg, borrow and steal and buy new at £540 from Robo Savvy. Robo Savvy was the cheapest that I could find.

Please feel free to supply the reasoning behind your answer.

Assuming that we're talking about humanoid kits, like the KHR-2HV, RN1, Bioloid, etc., defining 'slightly used' could be a black hole.

There's a lot that can go wrong, or be damaged, by poor assembly and use. If you decide to go the used route, you should be prepared to tear it down completely and rebuild it yourself, and to potentially buy some spare parts.

Personally, I wouldn't consider buying a used robot unless I knew the person and could inspect the bot myself before handing over the money. Eventually we may get to the point where there are Used Robot Dealers just like there are Used Car Dealers with some expressed warranty. But we're not there yet.

I agree. The world is full of shady people... and we've already been seeing those trying to take advantage of the high price tag that goes along w/ humanoids. Higher-dollar items translate to more money and less work on the part of the scammer.

But this considered I think 50% is reasonable, but always remember:

"A Robot is for Life, Not just for Christmas"

A used item should go for 50%. But it also depends on the
condition. Personally I make it a habit to buy new. If you
buy used and get a bad deal, you may be stuck with a bunch
of broken parts. And how can you tell if all the servos are
worn out on a used robot?

If the bot was from a reliable source I would gladly pay %60 of the original price.
