I think it is more of a marketing endevour.
Having presented Robonova in various public situations, I can assess that it is a crowd generator. Guys just gang up to see the magic. Most girls just look at it and comment about its lacking of any
Utilitarian consequence. (If she says it is cute or opts to touch it, you know she is not refering to the robot. If she expresses sincere interest, then she must be a <strike>mutant geek</strike> astute technologist.)
Once Target have the RN1 on display, they are sure to have a couple of hundred thousand guys and teen-agers volonteering to join their spouse/moms on a shopping expedition at Target.
Hence even if they don't make a fortune from selling RN1 (I'm sure they will sell a few hundreds - just think of number of Target shops times say 5-20 RN1s), they will make up for it just by having people buy other stuff when commuting around the store.
