I just joined this site today and am looking to get more into the world of robots. Im kinda confused right now so will take some time to search thre threads. Id ultimatelu like to buy a cool robot to play around with. Something around the $1000-$2000US range. Let me know what I should be looking at!

Price should not really be a parameter in your selection.
If you will like playing and learning with the robot, you will spend a lot of time with it.
Most of the models cost quite a bit and the time you will spend with the robot costs quite a lot. Therefore your choice should revolve around how you would like to spend that time.

Bioloid - graphic programming and embedded C, robotic servos, 15 different robot models, favored by university researchers
KHR - most aesthetic movements, visual programming only

I like the KHR2HV and Robonova but also curious about the Manoi. I dig the genex suit available for the KHR and I can't seem to see anything similar for the Robonova. Aesthetics and smooth motion are important but wouldn't mind some modding potential too. I take it then the KHR is certainly a great RC unit with some moves programming ability but not much free roaming or AI potential? When you say 'visual programming only' are you meaning no basic programming? I have never done any PC programming so Im after a user friendly interface. I would be looking to use the robot as a cool interesting gadget first, then as something I could do some basic programming, physical alterations and RC fun. I have technical expertise but not in electronics or programming.

"Basic" is a programming language with a missleading name. In the case of Robonova (and Microsoft operating systems) it is quite comprehensive.

I suggest you check out the threads on the different forums and try to digest the acronyms and general gist of what can be done with each of the models.

I spent yesterday checking out the threads and learnt a lot about what each can potentially do. Im still homing in on the KHR1V (rather than the 2HV after I realised the lineage).

What about Vstone products?

Out of interest two quick questions you may be able to help me with Limor:
- Does anyone use old mobile phone boards like the small intel or texas instruments processors found in dopod smart phones (Orange SPV or T-mobile smatphones in the UK). Ive been day dreaming about how I can utilize the components (inc camera's, sound players, bluetooth etc) found in mobile phones but dont know how practical it really is.
- Has anyone successfully morphed different robots together? Im wondering if the learning and sensor hardware from a Pleo could be hacked onto KHR1V's frame and servo system? So with calibration you get the sensing and behaviour of a Pleo with the movement of a KHR hacked so it speaks cylon instead of jurassic park whines. Anyway just pipe dreams for now.

It's popular to hack mobile phones in Japan and use the tiny cameras for robot vision. I've seen several sites while browsing but did not understand all the language translated. There are now several cameras that are plug and play, and the tiny head can be robot attached, if the interface and driving electronics are provided as well. I have one unit and doing some hack projects now.
