Hi,
Current are necessary to drive motor to generate electro-motive force to push the motor wires to rotate. If the current is so high that exceed the wire's max. rating then the wire will burn out (sometime, even the magnet) and the motor burn.
Max. rating can be found in the servo specification if they given.
To measure the current, you need to have basic electronic theory and measuring technique. I cannot simply explain. This can be found in electronic textbook.
