I heard some months ago in this site about a robot-from-scratch project, with original mechanical and electronic parts. Is there anything going on about this stuff or was it vaporware ?. I suspect some key people in this forum might be doing something.

Well I've been ordering all the parts and will start assembly on my custom biped this week. I have a slew of brackets I got from lynxmotion.com. I am using the SSC-32 controller and for servos I am using the Blue Bird
BMS-660MG. It has 195 oz-in of torque at 6 volts. That's more than my KHR-1. I am also developing two cool devices for Robo-1 bots.
1. an SDIO based WiFi to RS232 converter.
2. 6 DOF IMU based on three ADXRS300 gyros and the Freescall 1.5G XYZ QFN 3 accelometer.

Both of these devices will help control the robot via the Pocket PC version of Heart to Heart I wrote and use on my KHR-1.

I'll post some pictures as things get done.

One of the most challenging and important aspects of making your own humanoid is getting the body right. KHR-1 is a very pretty looking guy compared to some monstrosities out there. se7en has uploaded the 3D CAD model of KHR-1.
You could scale this model to fit various sizes of servos.

There are some new interesting digital servos out there for reasonable prices. The only problem with using non-Kondo servos is that the KHR-1 aluminum parts rely on the "free hone" which is a small plastic protrusion on the back side of the Kondo servo which effectively creates an exis along the servo shaft.

As for controler, there are many cheap-and-cheerful solutions that can support 17 servos and are small enough to be put onto the robot body. However, they dont have the ability to read the servo positions. This is used to teach the robot by molding him into a pose and reading the relative servo positions. This is not critical but nice to have..

hi there folks! my custom build i mentioned in my first post ages ago is still very much at the concept stage because i have about £3 to my name atm lol and i dont think il be gettin the resources to even get a prototype together in the near future. it sucks but iv got a few ideas for similiar projects that, at least in the earlier stages, might be a cheaper way to get summink built (4 legged friends anyone? )

anyways, im all talk an no trouser, but im very interested to hear what others have got up their sleeves. KHR-1s are faithful old things, but customs are always more interesting imo. so is anyone planning a cool scratch build? post up.
