Hello, welcome to the forums.
I suppose the answer to your question depends on what you want to do with your robot. If you are just beginning then either is a great choice. For example, as you stated, there are many "upgrades" available to the RN-1. It is strongly supported by a mechanical community and I would venture to say that this is because it is made out of aluminum parts over the plastic of the Bioloid. THe RN-1 has the gyros and accelerometer which I believe I read some people had trouble with on the Bioloid, but I am confident you use these on both given the proper time and effort. Also the RN-1 has a strong software hacking community (I-Bot, Dan Albert, Limor, Bullit,Pev, Sub Pilot... to name a few) who are trying some very cool software things. As you mentioned there is a large community that comments on a regular basis in the RN section.
I will agree that I am fairly biased since I bought a RN-1. But I will talk about the Bioloid now so you can hopefully compare them evenly and come out what is best for you. The Bioloid seems to have the best servos for the most reasonable price (I believe they are better then the Kondo, Hitec and JR servos). Also anyone using the Bioloid has the ability to program in C or the motion editor. It is a sleek design -which is much better then the default RN-1, and also has many forms (personally I prefer the look of the Humanoid). I think that the reason there are less mods for the Bioloid is because the aluminum doesnt exactly look nice blending with plastic brackets. There are a lot of brackets that come with the kit, so it is much easier just to use those instead of completely making a new set. As far as software goes, I know that Pev also has a Bioloid and has some cool things with his. They have some really cool sensors (light and sounds stuff) and I encourage you to watch the videos.
Both companies are good, so I believe you will find support from the company. I wish you goodluck in your decision, and I encourage you to search the forums (and the general section) as this question has been answered before.
