I had plans to make such a concept for a baby carriage few years ago. The idea is that if you rotate a heavy wheel fast enough then apply torque along one axis, the torque magically manifests itself in a perpendicular axis. That’s what causes the precession effects seen in spinning tops. In this case the precession effect is controlled in order to allow intuitive leaning into the turn when needed but prevents the bike from falling when not turning. The effect is magical effect of self-balancing.
This idea can be useful in robots. I've yet to see anything like this implemented on a robot though the only thing that comes to mind is a unicycle robot but it had a ridiculously big plate and no gimbal.
