Ziphius ist an aquatic drone controlled by your smartphone or tablet.
Although we are still in an early stage of development, we already have a fully functional prototype.

If you're interested, check our video:

youtube (dot) com/watch?v=RDlNh2fgUpo

Your feedback is very important for us, specially now that we have been selected to be one of the semi-finalists on the Insert Coin competition, organized by Engadget.

Cute but "drone" ?
Have I missed something?
It doesn't appear to be doing anything more than
any other remote controlled boat?

Yes it does, mantrid. Ziphius has an autonomous behavior, it is capable of navigating through augmented reality worlds, par example, following colours and and pre-determined objects. Its camera allows a first person view (FPV) control.

I dont know what "augmented reality worlds" means
but I dont see any indication or explanation of drone behaviour
in the clips.
Perhaps if there was a link to an explanation of its capabilities somewhere?
For example:
colour - ok I can see interest in following colour from a small sea going vessel thats potentially useful. But what is it doing now - what is it capable of?

following objects: again good idea but what sort of objects ? This is a very small craft low down on the water so its limited - what sort of sensors is it carrying and how is it following what type of object?

Augmented reality worlds is a vast term which can apply to multiply situations. We can imagine looking at a ball floating in the water and, through image processing, detect it and transform it in a sea monster; we can transform an empty swimming pool in a tropical aquarium; or we can play war games with virtual enemies. The main question about augmented reality is related with the reference points used in the real world. By image processing we can identify objects and use them as those anchors. Otherwise, we can use Ziphius's relative position and add virtual elements around it without exterior anchors.
In our drone, image processing capabilities are also the base for autonomous behaviors, it can detect colours or shapes and follow them (or perform any other action).
Right now, our creative team is idealizing a set of games and entertainment activities that will use this capabilities to create interesting apps but we still don't have them implemented.
Because detecting colours is one of the most easy way to get anchors and objects to follow, we are thinking about the possibility of allowing users to set the colours the drone should follow or identify. This way, the games can be played with the objects the user selects. Alternatively, for some specific games, we are thinking of selling the needed objects.
Because we can detect the relative position of the colour we are following in the captured image and because we have individual control of each propeller, we can drive Ziphius autonomously in the objects' direction. The ammount of target colour visible can give us an indication about the proximity of the object, specially for objects that we know.
We still don't have videos of these behaviors because we are still finalizing the image processing algorithms but we hope to provide some videos about this soon!

We did it! We secured a position as one of the top five finalists in Engadget Expand’s Insert Coin competition! Now, we need your help once again.

Our team is heading to San Francisco, on March 16th and 17th, to present Ziphius on stage and convince readers and judges (including top notch Ryan Block, co-founder of gdgt and Jim Newton, founder of TechShop) that we deserve to take home the top prize. We’ll handle the stage part but YOU have a major role in it too: as a reader, you can help us get to first place by voting for Ziphius!

Online voting during the event is one of three criteria to win the top prize. The other two are audience voting and the judge´s opinion. So, take a little time during your weekend, go to http://myziphius.com and make Ziphius a winner.

The whole event will be live streamed during the weekend so you can watch all the action. Tune in here: http://www.engadget.com/event/engadget-expand/about/. If you want to watch Ziphius highlights you can tune in online on the 16th March from 3PM to 3:45PM (Pacific Standard Time) where you will see us presenting Ziphius. On the 17th from 5:30PM to 6:15PM (Pacific Standard Time) the Insert Coin Award winners will be announced and live streamed. With your support we can be winners!

WHEN: Final Voting will take place March 16th, 8AM (Pacific Standard Time) till March 17th NOON (Pacific Standard Time).

WHERE: http://myziphius.com

Thank you so much for all your support.
