Hi All

I would say make the 19th April Bicester and the 28th June Birmingham the official events. Have the Bicester as a low key event and have the Birmingham event the main one as per normal. I will organize the Birmingham event and i will make a proper table this time, so that we look like pros. After the Bicester event we can have a talk about what happened there and what state all the bots are in. Maybe we could have 5+ for the fighting. You could also see if people would like a football match. We need 4 bots. And not forgetting the stairs working (will anyone bet NovaOne).

If I get time or when I can be bothered I might set up a uk robo one web site to make our little group seem a bit more slick. And post meeting time and the all important dimensions of the stairs, arena and race.

I have been busy playing with the football moves, just need to add some finesse in some places.

The best ball I found was a mini pratice football. It's foam, and has a shaped outside so doesn't roll too far when kicked. You can pick them up in most sports shops/toy shops. I got Mine from JJB sports £1.50 together with an England football mug :(

Excellent Orac, Very 8) , you aren't by any chance anygood at programming RoboNova's are you :D

Are your turns a fixed angle, or proportionally controlled?

Hehe,

They are fixed angle, I use the PS2 controller and have programmed in all the major compass points.

Each move has to start from a pre-determined position so they can all merge into one.

If I started from the home position, it wouldn't be seemless.

All I do on the analogue stick is thumb it from forwards and then ease it left and right to turn.

Just to clarify things for me:

When you say you have "programmed in all the major compass points" does that give you fix angle turns of 360/8 = 45 degrees?

When you ease the stick left or right, does your robot only turn if a 45 degree threshold is reached ?
ie If you start from the forward position (north, home position or 12o'clock) and you move the stick to the East compass point (3'oclock) lets say; the robot will respond by calling two 45 degree right turn routines in sequence?. Similarly starting from forward position and moving the stick to the south-west position; the robot will respond by calling three 45 degree left turn routines in sequence?. (Moving the stick all the way to the south just calls the backward walking routine?)

Sorry for being a nuisance :)

Hi,

No, this is what happens when I push the stick

North = forward walk one step (stops in foot forward position so if I keep these moves pressed they continue seemlesly.
NW = Forward walk with a bit of right bias
NE = Forward walk with a bit of left bias
E = Forward walk with lots of right bias (almost spin clockwise)
W = forward walk with lots of left bias (almost spin anti-clockwise)
SW = backwards walk with a bit of left bias
SE = backwards walk with a bit of right bias
S = backwards walk (looks scrappy as move has to end on foot forward position each time)

In this case, the analogue stick is working as a normal digital pad in 45 degree steps.

I have about 20 other various moves programmed in now so that I can move in very small shuffles for proper alignment to things (balls, steps, etc)

Pete

Very good stuff Orac.

I have been meaning to do something similar. But it is amazing how much time it takes to set up such a suite of moves.

Can't wait to see it in action.

Don't get me wrong, I still have some work to do.

Some of the transitions between directions need to be smoother to keep it nice and stable.

Also, with so many moves available, I need to do lots of practice.

What I am finding is that I tend to use certain moves more than others. This may mean me reducing the amount of moves to the ones that are really useful and stop me from being tempted into confusion. :D

As I now have my 1HV almost working I may well come along to all 3 events. Not sure which will be the nest day for the weekend event.

Any issue with maybe bringing my children 14 and 12?

Hi, no problem at all, although I would say that they may be quite bored at the Bicester event as it's more of a garage type event, unless the numbers rise dramatically.

The other two venues are based in science centres with lots of other things to do as well as the robot events.

Thanks

Cool !

Garage type event for my first outing is probably best !

Do we have a post code for the garage event to program the satnav ?
