question about socket for Acceleration Sensor

Hi all

I finally got an acceleration sensnor to start playing with the new findings about reading the Acc Sensor from the PC.

After looking at such a small and fragile part I decided I was going to solder a socket instead of soldering the acc sensnor directly (it's called a "socket" right? a "header" is the thing with the metal pins standing out, correct?) .

What I wanted to ask you is if I should look for some particular/special type of socket because the pins of the acc sensor seem really small.
I saw these on farnell http://pt.farnell.com/tyco-electronics- ... dp/1218867
Do you think these will work?

I know it's such a basic question.... I must admit my background is on software but I'm learning more and more about these hardware things and I like it a lot.

Cheers
Pedro

Hi Pedro,

The socket from Farnell is really for taking IC pins and the holes will probably be too small to take the pins of the accelerometer.

The accelerometer board has pins of similar size to servo pins and would mate with a connector like this:
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=115

I can't remember how long the tails are on the accelerometer board though and that might be a problem. The male headers have a long and a short part and I don't recall which is exposed. Also the height may be a problem especially if the speaker is installed. I used a 4 pin connector of the same type as on the bioloid servos, and then ran the accelerometer remote and the IR camera from the same bus.

They may be described as sockets, or female headers or receptacles. the pitch is .1inch / 2.54 mm. Any number of pins over 4 is OK they will cut down.

Hi Richard

Thanks for your reply.

With regards to the male headers used, the part that is exposed is the short one. The headers are much shorter than I'm used to see so I'm assuming it exposes the short part of the headers (aprox. 3.5 mm long)

Do you know if there is there any version of female headers that is less tall, to match the short male headers on the Acc Sensor?

Thanks
Pedro.

Try this one:

http://uk.farnell.com/samtec/ces-104-01 ... dp/1667510

It is for the 0.64mm sq pins and accepts insertion lengths between 2.62 and 4.06 mm.

Withdrawal force is a bit low, so you may need a couple of sticky pads to hold it firm.

Still not sure on height because I don't have speaker, the connector will raise the board by about 5 mm.
