Roboard without modified kernal

Does anyone know if its possible to access pwm ports without the modified kernal? Using the normal ubuntu kernal.

I just tested it and the PWM ports work with ubuntu generic kernal. just wondering what the custom kernal contains may be vga and lan derivers?
