Hi all

As you may have read on this thread http://robosavvy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7007 DMP produces a number of different products with their Vortex86 processor.

In particular the thread shows the upcoming Roboard 050 and an "unreleased PC" which is eBox 3350MX and has a great potential for Robotic embedded applications.

Image

We'll be receiving a few of the eBox mini PCs on RoboSavvy next week and we'll be exploring potential robotics applications with it.

Features:
- Uses the Vortex 86MX processor: this is essentially the same processor as the Roboard but with built in VGA

- No Robotics features or Robotics IO; the board IO consists of 3 USB ports, Audio In and Out and is powered at 5V
This is in line with the approach of DARwIn for example where a FitPC2 is used for the logic and a separate board is used for the Robotic and sensorial tasks

- 512 Mb RAM

- Size 9.5 X 9.5 X 2 (including the box; if we remove the box, size may be smaller).

- Built in VGA and HD Audio (built onto the SoC)

- Ethernet

- Several Processor design improvements including improved branch prediction and some instruction set improvements.

All the other features are similar to Roboard 110 except that this box includes VGA (built onto the processor) and twice the memory (and no Robotics features).

Benchmarks and Performance
We've seen benchmarks and the computational aspect is close to Roboard since the Vortex8&MX is derived from the Vortex85DX used on Roboard. However, here you have twice the memory and few architecture improvements which could make some difference depending on your application.

On the original thread where the PC was announced DMP mentioned twice the performance and 1Gb of RAM but this is not 100% accurate. I believe there are plans for such a model but it is not yet available. The one we'll be stocking and that we're now announcing here is closer ro the performance of a Roboard 110 with twice the memory.

Because the 3350MX lacks the Robotics features, it is not a direct competitor of Roboard and is instead more in the line of the approach used by DARwIn-OP separating computational power from Robotics tasks (with a FitPC2 and a CM-730).

The best part with this small PC is really the price. Because it doesn't have any of the Robotics features (which increase complexity and number of components significantly), it is expected to be priced around 72.50 GBP + VAT.

It is a good companion for a future Roboard 050 for example (this way you can share the computational and robotics tasks between 2 processors)
- OR -
you can use it standalone and use for example a USB2Dynamixel and an Arduino for the Servo interface and sensorial parts.

The product Catalog can be found here http://robosavvy.com/RoboSavvyPages/eBo ... atalog.pdf

We'll be posting more news in the next days and put it online for pre order. It is expected to be available for shipping next week. (before you ask, for Roboard 050 there are no dates yet).

Hi all

We wanted to let you know the eBox 3350MX Compact PC is now in our store and is available here http://robosavvy.com/store/product_info ... ts_id/1704

The price is set at 72.5 GBP exc VAT (87 GBP inc. VAT). (actual price may fluctuate over time due to exchange rate fluctuation, so please check our store page for the latest price)

It packs the same processor as the Roboard but with a few differences:
- Built in VGA card
- Slightly Larger form factor
- No Robotics IO
The existing IO is 3x USB 2.0 ports, 1x Ethernet, 1x VGA and Audio IN/out)

- Twice the memory: 512Mb
- Ultra low power consumption: 2A @ 5V (actually the board uses only 500mA; the other 1.5A (3x 500mA) are for the 3x USB ports when peripherals are connected).
- Smaller than a FitPC2. 95mm X 95mm X 2mm

We position this product as a solution for applications where you'd like to separate the Logic/Operating system from the Robotics part.

You can use the built in USB ports to connect the Robotics and Sensorial interfaces (USB2Dynamixel, USBSC32 for PWM servos, Arduino or PIC, Kinect, Webcam, etc).

Regards
Pedro.

Actually, the unreleased PC mentioned in the forum thread of RB-050 is eBox 3360MX, not 3350MX. The eBox 3360MX is still unreleased currently.

Hi Roboard

We're glad to hear that the eBox with the Vortex86MX+ has now a model name (3360).

Unfortunately the eBox division is not very forthcoming with supplying us with information. What we were told by DMP/eBox is that eBox 3350MX is the only product in their 2011 product catalog (no mention to 3360). So there is no indication about release date.

The main difference between 3350MX and 3360MX as far as I understand:

- 3350MX: Vortex86MX (which includes 512Mb RAM, 1Ghz, 16 bit memory controller, built in VGA and Audio).

- 3360MX: Same size as 3350MX, but uses Vortex86MX+ which has the same features as the 3350 except the memory controller is 32 bit and the small PC comes with 1Gb RAM.
The fact that the memory controller is 32bit also means VGA memory will be shared with the main memory (currently eBox 3350 has 32Mb dedicated Video memory)

We were also told to expect a price difference between the two (with eBox 3360 being more expensive to meet the extra performance offered).

We look forward for the release of the version with Vortex86MX+ to be able to offer 2 complementary products: the 3350MX the very affordable and capable PC and the 3360 with Vortex86MX+ with extra performance and memory boost.

However, I hope this is clear - and is the purpose of my post - DMP eBox division has not mentioned any plans to release the 3360MX any time soon.
I am quite sure about this as it was the subject of a lengthy email thread a couple of months ago.

Regards
Pedro.

That is correct. The eBox division currently doesn't plan to release 3360MX in 2011; this is why we always emphasize 3360MX is still unreleased in previous forum posts. Also surely, 3360MX will have a high price than 3350MX due to its spec.
