Looking for advice: learning 3D design

Before getting a 3D printer I want to learn at least the basics of 3D design. Currently I have no idea.

I want it to design little robot parts, initially derived from Bioloid parts and progressively start designing slightly bigger parts.

Which book/s would you recomend?
Which 3D design program?
How good is the software that includes Up Plus 2?

(I have been playing for a while with several 3D design software, Free cad, Solid Works, Blender, and Free cad seems the easier)

Try AutoDesk 123D but you can not beat Solidworks and Inventor!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’m also looking for 3D designing guide for my 3D creations. I’m no expert when it comes to designing so I better learn this field for good.
