well to keep things up to date here is where I am at following the tutorial at sparkfun.
when I connect and type in +++ the cursor simply returns to the begining of the line and no response from module.
the red light on module lights up when power is applied and the green one stays solid when I connect with it.

this is using lynxterm

Ok cool - but that is why BioBlue is not working. The Bioloid interface is locked to 57600 baud when using the Bluesmirf so bioblue sets the com port to 57600 baud when it connects. To get BioBlue to work you will have to set the Bluesmirf to 57600 as per the Sparkfun tutorial (on the old modules they gave an example of setting it to 57600 baud in the quick start guide pdf).

Hi Pev;
I purchased the BlueSmirf Gold and connected it to CM510. I tried to connect it with my DELL inspiron Laptop but only RED light blinks. Yellow light is OFF. I have to buy a Bluetooth Dongle ? :roll:

Sorry have been sidetracked by my Nao work recently (well for the last 18 months) but have just started to get back with my old Bioloid kit (am building a hexapod). Anyhow, as Limor said the important first step is to make sure that your laptop and bluesmirf are paired and that your laptop sees it as a virtual com port. After that it should be pretty much as per the rest of the thread.
