what happen with the gyro

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and a beginner in robotics. I've got my RN for a few weeks ago and I'm fascinated about it. Now I want to add a gyro. I've got a Cyclone PG-03. This should be the same gyro like GWS or other label. Isn't it?
The manual to add a gyro to the RN I've got from this website. The basic codes too.
If I switch my RN on, it will start normal. When I knock it, the RN respond very hectically. The servos move to fast (highspeed like). The robot is shaking like a pneumatic hammer. More and more it lose balance and fall down.
The LED level works normal. The colour change if the robot is moving. I can adjust this level. If i adjust gain there are two option. The robot take no effect or it flip out.
What happen? Eyerything seems to be normal if I have pluged the gyro out.
I think the gyro is defetive. Or is there another problem?

This sounds like a gain problem - there should be gain adjustment on the gyro and in your robobasic code. Try adjusting the robot basic code to lessen the gain until it remains stable when in the standard pose and you should be set.

I also added a gyro to my RN. The model I used was the MPI PG-2033 Micro Piezo Gyro. Datasheet here, showing gain and setup screws. When I did this, I set both screws all the way down to nothing and gradually increased until he moved a lot, but didn't start going crazy.
I'm not super pleased with it, but it is something, anyway. Video of my robot with the gyro is here. When it stands on only one foot, it is pretty impressive. I got all my infos from this forumz, and used code and the great howto on theoddrobot.com.

This is a matter of fine tuning. You gotta spend at least half an hour tweaking the gyro. And thats if you know what you are doing!!!

It is like balancing a coin! It dont happen by chance, It happens from practice and skill. This is like tuning gyros.
I would say that if you can tune a guitar then you can tune a gyro.

first you have to read the gyro directions then the threads on the gyro postings, next download and run the gyrosetup programs into RN-1. Now you can turn the gain all the way down, use the set screw to erect the RN-1 and set the home position of the robot. Now you can bring the gain setscrew from zero to about 1/4 up then use the GYROSET, GYRODIR,and GYROSENSE to get the results you want. one axis at a time.Good luck and keep trying.

Hi,

I bought another gyro. This one works normal. I tested different program codes. The balance of my RN is definitely better.
I don't now what happend with the first gyro. It seems that it is defective.

Did you get a different make and model gyro or just an exact replacement?

Hi,

the first gyro I got, was from label "Cyclone" and the type PG-03. The new one is from label "GWS" and the type is PG-03 too. I think that should be the same types.
Perhaps the first was a cheap imitation or it was damaged before. I bought this for 30€ from Ebay. It should be original packaging but it was loose. I had to open the casing to adjust the gain screw. It placed very bad. But I was careful to do that to avoid a damage. The gyro responses too quickly that the servos turning like highspeed mode. My RN got a bad attack. I can't adjust this. I think this gyro is scrap.
It was a mistake to open that, so I can't give it back to the dealer.
My curiosity was greater than my brain!:wink:

Thanks R2 for the heads up about this matter. There are many of us, like myself, that have yet to purchase the gyro and will greatly benefit from hearing about your experiences. I think there are a lot of companies out there with fakes. As a recent example, I purchased a SONY camera and was shopping for a second battery. I came across an entire instruction book on how to spot FAKE sony batteries!
