I came across these grippers:

What do you think? Has anyone tried them? Any videos?

Well, that's cute. I wonder if it can only grip on the side of the servo?

Well from the picture it seems that they can only grip from the side of the servo. If that is the case then they are quite limited!

I guess Hitec should have come too us before going ahead with that design. It is very flawed and impractical.

My current design is based on reciprocation so the two parts of the hand work opposite to each other and is a very basic concept that offers great flexability.

Marcus.

I think even my grippers are better, and they only cost £25 to make both:
Image
Ok,so they aren't super strong, but they didn't cost an arm and a leg, (or a finger for that matter)
Also I didn't have to modify my old routines (much) to compensate because the hands are basically the same shape.

Love to see other peoples own designs :)

They look really wonderful! and at a low budget as well. Can you please tell me more about the servos you used for them and also something about the camera module of your bot.

Thanks Charles

They are M64282FP Artificial Retina's.....

I know what your thinking, but thats what they are called.
Basically they are the camera modules used in they original Gameboy Camera.

Image

I'm affraid they are only 128x128 greyscale analogue output devices, and they are not functional..yet.

I bought them both second hand from my local gamestation shop, for £2.99 each. There is still some data available on them, but I doubt they are still manufactured.

I may eventually get to your level of image processing...one day.

But my aim is to keep all processing onboard, ie use another uC for higher level vision, sound and crude AI stuff.

I'll keep you updated in a few months when I get round to making a PCB and testing them.

Oh yeh, the servos are HS-56B's, they fit nicely inside the remains of the old RN hand.

Ticket submitted Hitec Robotics Team

Department: Marketing / publicity
Subject: Robonova GRIP L/R
Message:

Robonova GRIP L/R have you got a video of them working plz

Dear Graham,

we will prepare later Videos, but this is very simple structure. You just put plastic parts directly on the servo and no other parts necessary. After that, you need to program it with real time servo control.
please refer the manual.

The advice given is what we are doing anyway. Putting custom parts on a servo and using RB to program it!!!

Chris, I really like your gripper design. The simplicity is well thought out and it minimizes any changes to RN. Is there any way I can get a pattern to brew a set?

Maybe not a lot of functionality to the Hitec grippers at first glance but they look really cute and could probably grip a rope or grip a sheet of paper and pencil for some writing. I'd sure like to have a set. Are these being sold in the USA or Asia? Does anyone have a set? A vid would be cool to see.

Thanks, Humanoido

I'm looking for the drawing, but seem to have lost it. I try to make the time to draw it again for you within the next week. But I can't promise anything.

You're right they are only intended for picking up small, light objects eg small screw drivers or pens. (Obviously no rope climbing). The largest diameter they will grip is a 20mm (mouse) ball, and this is due to the internal shape of the original RN hand. That is, if i ever get a vision system working, to ID small objects to pick up.

I'd like to fit a more robust, stronger servo of the same size, can you suggest one?

Disclaimer: I haven't noticed any moves that have been seriously affected, but i may be wrong!

Thanks, as I'm interested in seeing the design on print and then maybe adapt the design to something with fingers so as not to copy per se. I've been tossing the idea around for some time looking at various gripper and hand designs for something that I could craft that's not too complex, but nothing has really significantly impacted me as for what I want, except the Hitec hands. Unfortunately these are only available in Germany, and not in the USA or Asia.

Take a look at the servo list. I've seen where almost any kind of servo has been used, even both digital and analog mixed. However, to keep compatibility with RNs software, a Hitec digital one could be selected.

Matt Bauer has a lot of experience with servo types and has posted servo information from time to time on this forum, when talking about grippers and his upgraded humanoids. That may be helpful too.
