IR Sensor inside the head?

IR Sensor inside the head?

So I didn't like the placement of the IR sensor on top of the Robonova's head, because it kept coming loose. So I moved it inside the head. I jammed it all the way to the front of the visor, in front of the LED. I can still get the robot to read the remote, even when I am standing behind the robot.

My question is how hot will the LED get? Is my IR Sensor in danger of melting because it is so close to the LED?. What other creative ways have people hidden the IR sensor?

I really don't think you need to worry about the LED overheating and causing damage to your sensor. Heat should be the least of your worries.

I've never heard where heat from the RN LED was overheating the plastic mount. Generally speaking it doesn't seem to be a heat problem with the type of plastic that the head is made of. But what type of plastic is the IR detector made of? I don't know. You could look online for the specs to see the component heat ratings and upper limits. You can tape the LED to a thermometer and check the temperature after some time. Then, compare that number to component specs.

How did you get it to recognize IR when operating the remote behind RN? Is the IR reflecting off something? My RN is sensitive to the IR Remote direction. I tried relocating the IR sensor and ended up putting it back on the top of the head with a better tape.

So I ran my Robonova for a solid twenty minutes or so, disassembled the head and felt the LED with my finger. There was no apparent heat build up, so I am no longer worried.

I placed the IR sensor all the way forward in the visor facing straight out. I should run into problems trying to control from behind, but I don't. I guess the IR is bouncing off the walls or furniture to hit the visor from the front. I can't explain it, but it works.

I'll keep the IR sensor inside the head until I run into problems.
