Off the subject at hand but, I'm curious as to where/why you're headed to Japan? My wife is from Kobe and we came back about mid January from a month long holiday stay. I can't wait to get back. She on the other hand loves it here! One of her first comments was "Wow, so much space! And nothing on it".

Sign me up as well, and since I'm all about choices I'd say make both types and let the customer choose.

What about a low tech solution for the gripper. Could you use your grippers in conjunction with an off the shelf servo saver?

Golygee! Wow Matt, really wow! (for lack of a better word). You guys are really seriously enjoying our Robonova's ha. I just want a simple bot, but watching what you are doing to this site is simply amazing. Life is no longer simple for me. It gets botciting each week. I thought I will be contented with a bot just walking, tumbling and dancing. Now you put our RN one step ahead of the others. I agree, let's make our bot the next friendly neighbor. Make that gripper a little more friendly. :D

Count me in!!!

Off Topic:
I'm curious as to where/why you're headed to Japan?

I'm on a oceanographic cruise from Guam to Yokohama. We are using the deep submersible remotely operated vehicle Jason to study deep sea volcanoes on the Marianas arc. I pilot the ROV from a van aboard the ship.
The shipboard internet connection is pretty iffy but at least we have one so hopefully I can keep up with the goings on here. I hope I can get my gripper order in before they're all snapped up.

Cool job subpilot. Take care. And if you happen to come up on dry land, I hope you get that chance to visit Akihabara Electric Town in Tokyo (about less than an hour by subway train from Yokohama). I'm sure there's a couple of shops there selling expansion for your RN. But I bet nothing beats "The Gripper" of Matt.

I thought the robo nova servos provide coltage feedback, cant you just monitor this to see when there is a stall on the griper to know that it has closed enough?

:D You guys are too kind :D
Would it be possible to Paypal you some $ now for a set of gripper parts? I'm not coming back till mid May and would hate to miss out.

Subpilot, No need to worry, If worse comes to worse, there will be a set waiting for you on your return. I have no idea what it is going to cost me to have them made yet. It all depends on the quantity I guess. The more I have made at once, the cheaper it will be. From the looks of things I might be needing more than I initially expected huh?

im in for a set as well. What servo for the grippers?

I used the Hitec HSR-8498HB's, but any servo with the same dimentions should work.

Miniature lawn mowers :) ???

I would imagine just adding some weight to the ankles will make it easier for RN to walk on Carpet? No?

BACK ON TOPIC:

Matt - can the gripper grab hold of a cable or nylon rope without letting go?

RN can rappel now!! WOO HOO!!

Yes he can, I'm making a video now demonstrating it! :D I was just a little concerned about him being able to lift his own weight, but... well hold on, I should have the video soon!

Uh, well, uhmm..., I went to a Temple on New Years Day! :)

Seriously though, that's pretty cool. You've got a job that most of us only get to see on the discovery channel. Will you be able to get much shore time while over there? It would be a bummer to get all the way to Japan and see nothing but the coastline. Oh, and take pictures! On the job pictures. I think most people here would find that interesting.

Just a thought, rather than try to measure the grip why not decouple the drive horn and gripper with a spring assembly that gives when excessive force is applied to the object being gripped.

These "claws" are awesome and I'd be interested in a set too if you can supply to the UK that is

Cheers

Yes, another video too. Aren't you guys getting sick of these yet?

Some of the routines need tweeked a bit (mostly w/ the timing), but I think it would be safe to assume that he's having more fun in the video than I usually do!
Enjoy!
