Hello (robo) world,

Wonderful news, the RN 1 kit I ordered last Saturday is being shipped to my address. To my parents address precisely, there’s always someone home and I won’t take the chance to miss the mailman :-) Yes! Enthusiastic and inpatient like a 5 yr. old boy again. Hope the mailman is running his legs out at this moment, but that’s unlikely at this hour in Holland.

The number of informational and (hopefully in a few days) useful topics I read, made me register to stay around in this great forum. Great for me I guess. So I like to say hello.

Bought a toy for a bag of money because I just like to play with controllable (remotely operated or not) toy like objects powered by air pressure, fuel combustion, electric current or any combination. The last few years I also gained some experience in PLC/DCS programming, as I still do for a living.

Especially the programmable part of the RN 1 is what I’m interested in. Lots or all of my model airplanes are remotely controllable and configurable (some has a quit “complex” setup of mixers), but none of them are programmable. A programmable, controllable, electrical powered toy with the looks and power of the Terminator seems obvious I guess.

Like the challenge to tweak gyro settings, to watch him (Is it a man?) react on motion and force. Experiment with input sensors, so familiar to me in the process automation. Even build my own parts in future (my model airplane shop is mainly equipped for wood working and I still like that too).

Mailmen are often married and I don’t think he spontaneously delivers the package tonight, he just isn’t that exited as I’m. Instead he has a total lack of awareness about the package waiting for me in some warehouse. So first things first I guess. Receive the kit, rtfm, build the robot, rtfm again, charge the battery (going to use the LiPo’s I already have) and then turn on the power.

Let’s see how my new hobby will develop! If it develops at all, only the first half of this post did actually already happen, the rest is future… Hope to report some progress soon!

Congratulation for your new investment!
be sure to read the troubleshooting section at the end of the RN1 wiki:
http://robosavvy.com/site/index.php?opt ... nova-i_faq

and please feel free to add stuff if you see anything missing.

Tnx limor!
Found some posts about two versions of the control board as far as pin assignment concerns. As far as I can see important but minor issues. They’re also seems to be the only “bad” things about RN. Rest sounds all great. Wonder if there besides different languages and RTW kits other differences are in the versions of the RN 1 kits as sold today?

afaik, the only thing to look out for is PCB configuration different than the one described in the paper manual. the PDF version should be up to date and can be downloaded from robonova.de

another thing is the charger. The one we supply is "Multicharger 810 WWC" which is an excelent multi voltage one. i heard the one supplied in some other countries is inferior.

Take a look at "him." Does he look like he should be wearing a dress? Look at those big arms and muscular pectorals and tiny butt. Does that look like a woman? Actually, the EMIC TTS board I have includes the female voice version, and the combo with RN is really something to experience! hehe

A crash turns most airplanes into garbage. In case of model airplane crashes however the build in equipment as well as the pilot, has fair chance to survive. This explains I’m still alive and have some battery packs on stock. In fact I’m in position to choose from different types of battery packs in several capacities as well as charging equipment.

For now I like to build RN as it was shipped to familiarize my self with all the ins and outs. Later on I like to replace the original NiMH pack by a 7,2V 2000mAh LiPo battery pack (incl. voltage regulator). My good old Robbe Infinity 2 will do a great job charging it.

It was a long night and I’ve a blister in the palm of my right hand, it takes some screws to mount... I had a really great to see this man growing. Humanoido was right: RN is 100% male and will certainly not ware dresses! What a cool piece of equipment!

Thought I had to solve some problems first, RN seems to work pretty well now.

-The head
It doesn’t fit the way the manual describes The servo horn which holds the head, is attached to the top body assembly by four PH-T 2x8 screws. Those screws are way to long to assemble the head later on. You can mount the head at the same time together with the servo horn on the top body assembly. In this case however the two screws at the most front of the top body assembly can’t be inserted because the head is covering the holes. This is what I did.
You can also use the shorter spare “T” screws to attach the servo horn to the top body assembly. Tighten the top body assembly with all 10 screws and then attach the front head part with two “T” screws on the servo horn (two holes facing to the backside).

-Led board
The screws to attach the led board are too long, it’s to heavy to screw them all the way in. The visor might break by excessive force, I used shorter screws.

-Remocon
The remote control doesn’t seem to work. Didn’t spend much on that yet, but just following the manual on setting up Remocon didn’t make the RN react on any input from the remote control. I’ll spend some time on that today.

-Pin assignment
Unfortunately I connected the servo’s the way wiki describes in the “errors in the manual section” here at Robosavvy. After powering up the first time all right hand servo’s on the right side took wrong positions. Some servo’s didn’t move at all, while controlling for example the right knee output the right foot was moving. By the time I understand I had to rewire the right side servo’s, the right pelvis servo was fried, because it applies excessive force to the wrong direction. This servo is garbage now and needs replacement.
Rewiring the servo connections according to my original paper manual did correct the problem. Now I only need to order a new servo to replace the broken one.

What went wrong here? Did they ship an old(er) version of the RN 1 kit to me? The version of my control board is V2.5 0512. Guess I had to take a better look in wiki, it says in the newer version V2.5 2511 the pin assignment is changed. It also says the newer version is from dec 2006 and hey it’s 2008 now so I just assumed my board is the newer one.

Board Versions
Even after I ordered my Robonova, there was a posting on the Robosavvy forum about different board versions. At first it was confusing because you have different board versions posted with images that, at first glance, look identical.

Manual Versions
There are also different manual versions now, and these can be found in the downloads section of the Hitec web site. The best bet is to stick with the manual supplied with the RN kit, and as a check, verify the controller board number with the photos in the manual. Downloading the same manual version is also helpful as the photos can be computer enlarged and they're in color.

Manual Error
There was also an error in my manual (I have one of the first RNs) and one of the leg/hip servos had to be figured out. The true plug and play wiring was opposite as show in the manual! I had some postings about this in the forum, at that time.

Servo Cables
About the servo connector cables - it was not easy to see the very light gray side on the black cable and I had to check and recheck these under strong light.

Nonstop Screwdriving
For newbies doing a first assembly nonstop, it helps to have a variety of screwdrivers with different handles. Just switch off now and then to lessen the hand strain. Also using a special screwdriver with a large rubber round ball top is extremely helpful, and this is what I used for the majority of assembly.

Mixed Bolts
Indeed, there are bolts, some of which are mixed up when designated in the manual. It's not too difficult to figure it out, just time consuming to back them out and replace with the correct size ones.

Remocon Loading
The Remocon doesn't work at first, until its software template is loaded in. It's just a matter of following the manual at this point. One good check is to use the program's remocon. I've had a lot of fun with this, when RN is connected.

Battery Blue LED Circuit
Much of my time was spent figuring out the battery low circuit, and troubleshooting this point. If you have an older RN, you may want to review the posts on this, and create the circuit.

I hope this overview is helpful, reassuring, and can lead to some steps for checking early Robonova kit versions.

Tnx, will do some more browsing.

Remocon works just fine at the moment. The manual reffered to a none excisting tempate file (auto_action.bas) on the CD. Loading the Overall Tempate Program(Version 1.00 20051115).bas did do the job.

The low battery warning by blinking the LED and some beeping worked well right away. Spending some time now to increase the low voltage setting to get warned a bit earlier.
