Robots and humanoids are generally designed to perform indoors - not outdoors. Outdoors, the CEO promo was held with 3 robots, a Parallax Biped Penguin, Tomy i-SOBOT Humanoid, and a Hitec Robonova humanoid. First up was Penguin with an amazing Happy Dance. It got everyone fired up to see the most tiny robot flailing his little body around to the music.

Following that great performance was amazing little i-SOBOT doing martial arts, Kung Fu and Karate, concluding with Tai Chi. Following this, Robonova was taken out of the bag, - and you could hear the gasps and remarks about what a powerful and heavy robot! Robonova lived up to his reputation and performed flawlessly, the closing move was an acrobatic flip which made everyone go crazy out of their minds.

One comment about outdoor performance, for which these robots are not designed. In cold weather, the battery reserves degrade, so remember to begin with a recent full charge and have extra batteries on hand. Second, even under overcast skies, the solar infrared floods everywhere and blocks the IR receiver on the robots. The known quick solution is to use the IR controller at close range.

During the Robonova performance, a cat took interest, came over to watch and everyone was laughing about this. The cat approached quite close but remained partly hidden behind the side of the bench, watching the entire performance with an unusual patience and great interest. If only cats could talk. hehe..

Humanoids - the more complex they become, the more unpredictable the behavior. Due to random IR flooding, i-SOBOT humanoid took off on his own, talking about how great he was, and generally walking around, doing some random moves in between. It was very impressive, even though totally unintended! To the reserved Asian modesty of the observers, it remained an amazing experience, and a hint of things to come with humanoid robotics in the future.

Parallax Penguin biped had a dance program that was not looking at the IR receiver, so it remained stable under IR flood.

Taking no chances and lessening the opportunity for Murphy's Law effects, the controller was used in closer range. In this way, Robonova remained extremely solid under IR flood, even with IR polling, and its receiver seemed less sensitive to and less affected by random impinging solar radiation. The controller was very stable and effective, with no observed randomness. This is probably a good thing, considering the power of Robonova.

I would be interested in learning about other outdoor humanoid experiences.
