My RN has arrived, anything I should look out for during assembly, other than taking some time to RTFM?

I shall be looking forward to getting the CMU Cam II and speech board I bought a while back built in....

If you look to the left, under "Main Menu" there's a topic called "Robonova-1". Under that "Assembly". Limor and his brother documented as they built. It should help you out greatly! There are several early posts here on this forum (page 2... maybe three by now?), that can show what others have gone through when they first bought their RN-1 too.

Tips:

* Get a small battery powered screwdriver (Black and Decker works well)
* Take your time...work on it over a few days
* Buy a tube of thread-lock
* The leg brackets are tricky because they are identified with different flange heights. Make sure the hip bracket doesnt "cut" into the servo leads
* assemble the robot once correctly and verify operation - THEN - use threadlock on the important bracket joints (mainly the upper arm, hip and ankle)

Do it slow...read and re-read the instructions as you install...prepare to spend a LOT of time on cable management.

Thanks for the tips.

I have already been confused by left and right legs, as the manual changes from 'viewed from the back' to 'viewed from the front', so the left leg is on the right!

Those servo case screws are a PITA. Very poorly formed and very likely to strip, but my screwdriver is charging, ready for tomorrow...

I know that a lot of this has been covered before, but one thing that helped me alot was to use the color PDF file instead of the black and white printed document that came with the kit.

ALso I made a few mistakes about confusing left vs right. I finally solved it by keeping a printed copy of page 10 of the assembly manual in front of me. After each step I would verify that I had the right servos connected to each other.

I have read and reread the manual during the installation but I don't know how I end up with the right leg attached to the left hip :D

So now, without looking at the manual, you know where the right leg should be. Just figure out the "Hitec" mark or logo orientation printed on the servo.

I used a small battery powered driver. But I only used it to help getting the screws partly in. The last few turns I did by hand, because the battery operated device is likely to strip the heads.

I cannot emphasize this more:
Use a really good Philips or Pozidriv screwdriver of the proper size.

I went thru 8 different screwdrivers in my shop.
I thought that all of them where "good" ones. But after 20 screws or something I got tired to be carefull to not round the edges of the screwheads.
I fact, I went to the tool-shop and bought a really good single srewdriver of the right size with a really good tip and defined edges. At least regarding the prize it has to be really good :-)
I also bought a "really good" tip for the power screwdriver.

From this point on the assembly went like charm. Unscrewing and partly screwing in with the power device (with the new tip). Then fastening with the normal screwdriver.
None of the screwheads rounded or striped.

After a while I realized that I need the thread-lock. Some of the screws at the hip loosened.

This was the moment, I was really happy to have good tools and that the screws were not rounded during assembly.

You won't regret the buy.

Done the legs, just starting the arms. Can anyone confirm 2 possible errors in the manual?

On page 22, bottom left picture shows servo 3 connected to servo 4 and servo 1 connected to servo 2. Page 10 shows that 3 goes with 2 and 1 goes with 4. Which is correct?

On page 28, second picture from the bottom, shows servo 11 on the left and servo 12 on the right. If I line up the servos, with the black screws uppermost and the cables on the outside, 12 has to be on the left and 11 on the right!
