What makes the hitec servos more expensive the robotis ones?

The hitec servos appear to have lower torque and are lower voltage (so more current). The 5498SG has metal gears and a metal horn.

The robotis servos have plastic gears but much higher maximum torque. They are smarter in that they communicate over a high speed serial bus and can easily relay information such as position, current draw and temperature.

Does anyone have any insights as to why the hitec servos are more expensive? Is the construction/quality better or is it a brand recognition thing?

The robotis servos are a next generation when compared to the Hitec. It is often true that next genaration components are lower cost than older ones.

If you have to buy Hitec due to mechanical or interface compatibility, unfortunately you pay the price too.

The new V2 servos from Hitec look very little changed from originals except you pay even more to have some problems fixed.

Hi I-Bot,

Do you know how to remove the circuit board form the servo? I think you have to desolder it from the motor first but I'm not quite sure. It seems fairly stuck on one end.

The easiest way is to desolder the 3 motor pins. The motor and board can be removed together, but the motor has some glue to the case, so it must be pushed out with some fair force on the drive gear.
