Hello all,

I'd like to share my new design for my FRH-1 (Farrell Robotic Hand v1) and get some feedback. I designed the claws with a 3d CAD program, printed out the design and created these pieces by hand, so they are definitely beta. I used extra-strength aircraft aluminum for the entire hand.

Sorry limor! It's still just aluminum. But being extra-strength aircraft grade it is still very strong and hard to bend. I have .04inch thickness and have bent it with both a seeming tool and a tool-steel blade. The seeming tool can work wonders, but with th efingers so small it cant really get in there, so i'll use it to start the bend and for about 30 degrees, and then switch and use the tool-steel blade to finish and perfect it.

I used a scroll saw to cut out the pieces that fit around the servo, and for each finger I used a nibbler tool and some files becuase they are too small to hold on to in the saw (and i have broken a few blades already trying).

So, your prototype is made from thin aluminum ... why is that any better than my using stiff paper? They're prototypes ... but everywhere I pose a question about gyros, servos, sensors whatever the response is mocking about cardboard? But you take the basic bracket I designed, then add fingers to it (as I had originally asked people if that's what they wanted) and call it your design? Your design is copying Matts base and cutting out the individual fingers of the grabber I had posted earlier when I asked for input ... not deriding and ridicule ...

A prototype is a prototype ... the strength of the pieces is the sum of the servo and final materials used to make the part ... not the prototype. Hence why I choose a more affordable and much easier prototype medium ...

But all I get is mocking deriding my designs and hate mail ...

The cardboard jabs even continue if your video!

Have you seen any advantage/disadvantage of having the 'thumb' offset to the top of the gripper rather than centering it?

Well a prototype is also meant to test out an idea, where cardboard, stiff paper and any material less than the strength of the final product will not give an accurate presentation of what may happen with the final product. The aluminum I am using is stronger than the stock aluminum and I will be using the same stuff for a final production. Which is why for example, I show that one can still climb (granted it was just a picture, but i assure you it could climb) ,but at least hold the entire weight of the RN on a rope. I can punch and it is very strong, showing that it is a plausable idea. I have not included your name in my presentation, I have not sent you any hate mail, and I do not hate you. Even if i did, its the internet, these are forums, everyone is here to learn. The aluminum I bought (from enco) cost me $8 for a 12 by 24 in. sheet. The tools, albiet rather expensive, do not really play into the cost as I can make as many parts as i want at a very minimal cost. The blades on the scroll saw cost pennies, so it's easy to pay that off. And the main reason I come here and work with robots? Simply to learn. I learn from fabricating aluminum parts, designing and redesigning. It's not just something fun to do. (but it is rather fun :) )

Pev, I actually have not tried the 'thumb' being in the center, but one could imagine that it may be more stable(not sure either way). After attaching the 'thumb' where I did I noticed it was very stable and have proceeded with it from there. My original idea was actually to have six fingers and use another 'thumb' on the other side.

But I like the idea of keeping the hand humanlike, although if performance was a huge issue I would consider moving it. If that were the case I may convert to having three fingers on the top, and two on the bottom (even more gripping space). Or perhaps my original idea.

Bottom line is my designs are to give the RoboNova-1 more function ... but again ... instead of viable input all that gets posted is "targeting" by online bullies 'n ***who think if they deride my work that makes them a better person ... NOT!
