Hi, im yet to take the plunge and buy my first humanoid, definately looking to get a Robonova however im a bit concerned by the number of posts relating to dead servo's, is this a common problem and something that is just accepted? im also interested in what justifies a waranty repair on a servo, and where i would need to send it to for a replacement / repair (i live in the uk). Great forum and very informative. Many thanks Phil.

Hello,

I spoke with the english hitec rep and he told me that they get about 5% return on the servos that he said was the standard for electronic eqipment.

I had a servo go in my KHR-2 and I sent 2 back to Kondo and had the replacement in about 3 weeks.

As a rule of thumb I think that they will replace any servo the first time after that you would have to talk to them.

hope this helps.

I had a servo burn out when it got stuck against another body part and they replaced it under warranty. It took some time, claiming a backorder, but it did come through. Someone else called the "backorder" a way to discourage people from doing warranty servo exchange, but I also saw "on order" from many online robot sites RN servos.

Touching the same piece of wood that Pev is, no burn-outs here in 8 months of RN-1 ownership. But, I can see the potential for them if the user isn't careful - some of my playing around with certain moves caused jams or excessive strain on individual servos, so treat your forthcoming robot with some care!

Don't necessarily be concerned by the number of posts you see on any forum about any issue, because you have no frame of reference to the other people without issues. Remember, people with problems post a heck of lot more than people without. For instance, do you see any posts on this forum saying "My servos didn't burn out today"?........

You know, the 5% return rate struck me as kind of high, although I had no point of reference. Googling around a bit, I see that retail analysts Olswang (whoever they are) claim that 12% of iPod owners will need a repair, and that the estimated fault-rate of non-iPod mp3 player owners is 6%. Whilst this says a lot about Apples comparative potential quality issues, even the lower number is in line with what the Hitec support rep said, so on my limited research, I guess the support rep is for once right about the standard - presuming he/she is being honest about the return rate :)

The only time I was having servos burn out from under me was when I was over-volting the little guys. It was my fault and Hitec never recommended anyone try it, but...
