DirtyRoboto's Sonar Challenge

Post by DirtyRoboto » Mon Jan 15, 2007 11:39 pm

Here is the challenge I present.

At THE END OF FEBUARY all submissions must be entered in video format or else the code handed over to Admin for verification. All video should be backed up by code.

You must program your RN1 to pick up an egg from ontop of a coke can (upside down standard soda can) and then take 6 steps away. Then the RN1 must relocate the can and replace the egg.

This is to be done within an 1 meter square area.

The starting position must be at 180 degrees facing away from the egg, with the RN1 in the center and the egg in one corner.

You must program your RN1 to use sonar to locate the egg and also to handle the egg.

If you wish to enter then please submit by posting. If you need any clarification on the rules then please ask.

I will personally buy a Hitech HSR-8498HB for the winner.
The winner will be the person who can supply verifiable code to admin that successfully does the test in the least time using a base RN1.

Mods allowed are SONAR, GYRO, ACCEL, HANDS, GRIP TAPE.

Hi,
Only RN-1s? Or can I use a Manoi? 16 oz soda can? Why are you going to give away a $70 USD servo? Do you think this can't be done and you won't have to give it away? Will you ship to the USA?

Thanks

Are we talking about an empty coke can?
Are you going to ship to the republic of china?

Srobot, to be fair, everyone would have to use
the base robonova.

I'll have to upgrade my camera, as it only
takes 15 seconds worth of video. Any camera
recommendations? Formats, specs, etc.?

So how can this be fair if some RNs use the
various listed expansions while others do not?
It looks like one will need to upgrade. Plus,
sonar is mandatory as stated.

I like this idea. It promotes competition and
expansion, and increases skills and capacities
of RN and its programmer.

I call this challenge off, due to ignorant and short sighted views expressed by a community that should be better disposed to challenge.

I will endevour to complete the task myself and post any results on this thread. I will keep the servo for my own use, as many of you would not appreciate the gift other than its cost value.

I thought I was doing the community a favour, but can now see that the community is more interested in free handouts and instant gratification rather then hard work and endevour.

For all of the leeches on this forum, die!
For all of the innovators on this forum, exceed!

Marcus, I was actually waiting for an answer to the question about allowing other Bots.

You selected a practical exercise that is easily reproducable and meaningful in the real world. The fact that we do not have to physically gather to do it opens it up beyond geographic borders.

Do not confuse sarcasm/attempted humor for short-sightedness or ignorance. Being a buncha tech weenies, you have to expect everyone to drill down into the Dirty logistics of the endeavor. I think it is a GREAT idea, and would appreciate the challenge even if the prize was a servo wire.

I'm serious too, about "what is the camera spec info" to make the movie, and where's the best place to buy sonar, gyros, accelerometer, and tiny hands with fingers and opposing thumb? Help!

If you're going to have a contest, you have to expect questions about the rules. If you're too thin-skinned to answer the questions then don't have a contest. When you issue a challenge with a prize you are trying to convince people to do something that you want them to do. Herding humans is never easy.

Hi,
Dirty I think you should do it, because I think it will help get us better, smarter robots, and with a dead line it will help us get it done quicker. (NOTE: I'm NOT saying thay will be better or smarter because of the servo)

If you want to keep the servo you can, no body will make you give it away. Like you sayed "I thought I was doing the community a favour" you are doing a big favour! I still really think you should still do it, even if you don't want to give the servo away. It'll be lots of fun!!!! :D :D :D

I know that DirtyRoboto can easily meet that challenge and claim the award! From all the wonderful things he's posted and accomplished, and many others as well, I believe each and everyone of us has our own challenges to meet.

Maybe we are all working alone on our individual projects, and this forum is a great place to share that information, and ideas, and get some help along the way.

The contest is still a great idea. If anyone can accompllish the contest goal, it would be DirtyRoboto. I say, I look forward to seeing your results!

About the question on where to buy the sonar, gyros, accelerometer, tilt sensor, LCD display, Bluetooth... I was asking about the Hitec Robonova versions. These come ready to install into RN, with instructions and all necessary parts and software. For me, that's the way to go. But the Hitec USA site does not list the products. What's up with that?

Yha, Hitec USA has been saying their forums will be "coming soon" for the last like 5 months.

I hope this helps,

Dirty, this forum is ABOUT robots, not read and posted on BY robots. Humans have faults, and also have a desire for fun. Be a little thicker skinned? A lot of people - myself included - really appreciate your contributions to this forum and the community, we really do, you've kicked out some good stuff with respect to motion and sonar, which really complements some of the other aspects of advancement on here with respect to hardware, but also is more available to the average user who doesnt have a home shop.

But lighten up a tad?!

Oh, and wheres the moonwalk?! I'm still waiting for your moves!

Marcus, we're all on your side.
Sorry to hear about stuff happening.
I assure you, it happens to all of us at one time or another.
It's really good that you can sort of balance it out by making so many wonderful accomplishments with yor RN and post the results here where everyone can appreciate you and your work. It's a balance of Yin and Yan, of plus and minus, matter-antimatter, but you already know that. Hang in there friend, and keep up those great projects!
