In several of my previous posts I blather on about using RC helicopter gyros in HH (heading hold) as the basis of an IMU system.

heading hold gyros are great I fly heli's and know a few guy's with camera rigs like the one you linked it is surprisingly easy to set one up. there are some pretty cheep ones that work ..ok.. but around 80$ if you had 2 I cant see your bot falling over if you mixed them correcty in to the ankels but I am a heli guy still not really familiar with bipeds yet... I was just thinking heading lockers may not be good for this if you hook a servo to a hh gyro and give a small input it will drift to the servo's limit and then hold the new position till a new command is sent I am shure it is do able but that might make it confusing.

I'm a heli guy ( TRex 450 ) too. I have 4 GY401's and 2 Telebees to play with, so it makes sense for me to see what they can do.
My plan for them is to use them more as very nice gyros that are involved with active cpu balancing rather than just putting them inline.
I was also planning on using them with accelerometers to help cancel drift, but I really was amazed at how little those cam platforms drifted. Especially after reading a bunch of forum posts with people mentioning that drift was not even a problem.

I don't know why it did not occur to me before, but..
I just hooked up one of my gyros to the scope. What immediately stood out was how clean the signal was.
It was also cool adjusting the gyro gain from my radio and watching the pulse length change. The lower the gain, the less the pulse length will vary. I guess I'll be running 100% gain then!
One interesting thing was how much of the pulse width was seemingly wasted. 50% was always constant!
I did run across a possible trouble issue (with a Telebee) that I did not think about. The gyro does an init when power is first applied and the sucker didn't want to init when it was on its side.
