I am currently running Ubuntu on a laptop and attempting to serially connect to the CM-5 in order to access the motion file and make the robot move.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about serial connections and don't even know where to start to make this connection happen.

Any insight into this would be much appreciated :)

I would start using Robotis tools with Windows, and when you feel comfortable with the tools and the robot, start using Ubuntu, but with Ubuntu you could not use Robotis tools, so you will need to find or develop alternative tools.

By the way, what do you mean with "access the motion file and make the robot move"?, from Ubuntu access the motion file in the CM-5?, it will be a lot easier to use the .mtn motion file in the Ubuntu file system.

Thanks for the answer :)

I've been using the Robotis tools and have gotten the robot to move. I'm now trying to make the robot move using Ubuntu... what alternative tools do you mean?

What I meant was there is a motion file stored on the CM-5, and I"m trying to call those motions so the robot will move.. maybe that's not what I'm suppose to be doing?

To further clarify:
I am looking to establish a connection from Ubuntu to the CM-5 via serial-USB (with the dynamixal). I would like to simply send integers 1-250 to command the robot to perform the corresponding motion. I feel like this is a rather simple task but have no idea where to begin

I think a good and easy approach may be create a program with the Roboplus Task (you will need Windows, I don't know if Linux Wine can run Ropolus Task) which execute a motion when receive certain value. You can test it with the RC-100A controller or with the Roboplus Task virtual robot controller.

In order to send the values from the PC you can use the Zigbee SDK. You will need the Zigbee Zig-100, the Zig2Serial and USB2Dynamixel for the PC and the Zigbee Zig-110A for the CM-5xx controller.

Hope it helps :)
